What about dropping an electronic device?

It seems that the failure rate of electronics is very high after being dropped. Is it mainly due to mechanical failure inside the device? or can it also affect so electrical properties?

It's pretty much all due to mechanical damage - leads popped, printed circuit board cracked, components dislodged or moved enough to short, etc. I know of very few devices themselves that die from shock. (Although a diode, transistor, etc can be killed by the shock of a pair of side cutters clipping the lead - but again it's internal mechanical damage).
