I have a 1999 Mountaineer AWD V8 with 70,000 miles on it. I have been hearing a whirring noise when under load (applying the gas peddle). It doesn't have to be a hard acceleration just any time you press the peddle. When you let off it stops. Fore example you can be cruising at 40 with the noise and it stops when you let off the gas. I thought it was in the front at first (assuming at this point it is a bearing or u-joint somewhere) even though both r & L front inner bearing have been changed. Then when I sat in the back seat, I think it is in the rear. I really need to get it on a lift somewhere and put it in the air, but I am kind of thinking a pinion bearing or u-joint since I am reasoning that an axle bearing would be making noise constantly unless turning...right?
Your rear differential is probably damaged. I just had my vehicle in for the same symptom, and the noise was due to a damaged Ring and Pinion gearset. See my thread "Breaking in a Repaired Differential".
Edit: It's possible when your bearings were replaced the differential was not reassembled correctly (common problem). AS I understand it, they are pretty tricky to get put back together right, and if they aren't it leads to damage to the Rink and Pinion. If you had someone do it for you, i'd take it back and make them fix it for you.

The bearing that were replaced were on the front. The rear end has never been opened up but I did replace the pinion seal about a year ago. I was careful to not over torgue the yoke when I put it back on. You may still be correct on the ring & pinion making noise though.
Thanks,
