I have a 95 f-250 with a 5.8L 351. Mybrother had the oilpan replacved but the guys forgot to replace the dipstick. I really need to do it because i am restoring the truck but i dont know how it goes. Can any one help me on how to install a dip stick?
Dan
I can't remember where it is on my truck, but on other vehicles I have owned the dip stick tube inserts into a hole in the block, timing chain cover, or something other than the oil pan. Check it over closely and see what you find.
The original dipstick went in a hole in the block on the drivers side on the rear 1/2 of the block about an inch above where the oil pan bolts to the block. You'll see a flat cutout in the block and there is a hole there for the dipstick. Not sure why it was removed as it doesn't have to be for the oil pan to be removed, but thats where the hole is. The tube itself has a small bracket coming off of it that uses one of the exhaust manifold bolts to secure the dipstick tube. Just push it in the hole, and bolt it down.

I can tell you why
By not removing it, it's possible to bend it while installing the oil pan. It's usually part of the "procedure" the book-following monkeys must follow blindly.
But the dipstick tube only protrudes about 1 1/2" into the block...the dipstick itself goes in much further, so it doesn't make sense to me to pull the whole tube and not just the dipstick ??
