64/65 Frontend

Hi,, I'm a new member here, and so far I'm really impressed by the quality of help that I have seen in the forum. I have a '64 F100 that I just bought as a hobby truck. I will be installing a 302,and I plan on keeping the 3 speed manual tranny. This truck is a 2wd. with a 6 cyl, which i suspect is a 223ci. The info tag on the door lists the truck as a '64 and everything about it looks stock. The body style is definitely a '64 ,BUT the front steering and suspension is a twin I beam. Has anyone else ran across this oddity? I'm thinking that perhaps Ford started using the '65 twin I beam frontend close to the end of the '64 production run. Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

That's right, it's a '65. Actual production date was in '64, but it's a '65 model.

61-64 vs 65-66

I have the 262-6 in my 64, but that wasn't available in 1965.
Manufacture date - the assembly date code - the far right 6 numbers of the Vin number - are usually August of the year before the 'year model' to August of that year.

Other differences 'tween 61-64 and 65-66 - other than the twin I-Beam are:

the deep inside step was removed on the 65-66.
the steering column comes through the floor on 61-64, through the firewall on the 65-66. and the dash has a quarter moon notch for it come through.

The transmission tunnel is different - it is taller on the 61-64.

Under the hood - irregardess of the motor - the inner fender well is not big and rounded, but is flat and heads down deeper - more room under the hood.

The easiest eye catching difference is the grill. On a 64, the ford lettering is above the grill - small letters about 1-3/4 inch tall. The parking lights are in the grill in line about 6 inches in from the headlights. The grill has 8 separate rectangles. On the 65, the letters are above the grill, but larger - and the parking lights are above the headlamps - in line with the letters. the grill has continous squares.

The grills from 1961-1966 changed every year.

Partially true.

All 65 66 F350s carried over the eariler cab and front assembleys
All 65 F100 four wheel drives use the eariler cab and front assembleys
All 65 66 F250 four wheel drives use the eariler cabs and front assembly.

Big Tex, Excuse our manners, Welcome to FTE with Ford trucks we're the best.

The I-beams surely seperate the 64 and 65 model years. As per earlier the intake/exhgaust manifolds swapped sides on the engines are a give away too. The 302 would be a much easier swap in a 65 also.

How do you plan on using the truck?

It helps some times to give all the info. Was not attempting to correct you just add additional information on what will additionally swap. Lots of 65 66 trucks get passed over in yards due to the grill. but the parts still interchange with the 64 on down trucks from the large units.

you can even use a N series cab to 72 but it will have the nice tall top when doing early cabs.

Okay..... so I guess it's a '65 . The intake and exhaust are on the right(passenger) side of the engine. Thanks for all the help guys!!! I plan on swapping in a 60 over 302,mainly because I have 3 of them laying around the shop. The truck has a good straight, rust free body, so I'm going to keep it stock on the ouside, Steetrod on the inside.
