I have a 2004 Escape with 45k miles. My check gas cap light came on and has stayed on for about 4 days now. Will there be any codes stored if this light is on? Is it most likely that there is a leak somewhere, or is it more likely that the sensor is bad? Where is the sensor that turns the check gas cap light on, and does it have a name? I appreciate any responses.
There is a pressure sensor somewhere in the evap. line. You didn't overfill the tank by filling after the pump kicked off did you? Topping off the tank will cause liquid fuel to get into the evaporative system and cause the code.

I got the fuel cap light on my f150 , changed the cap, didn't work , I do I fix the problem?
disasemble your dashboard
find the light that goes to cgc
Remove said light
reassemble
I dont really know how you "should" do it, but I hate stupid things like that... I'm the type of person that removes the warning lables on obviously dangerious objects...
I too have this problem with the gas door ajar lifgt on the dash
Is there a door switch or a sensor for it ?
could it be the same problem as the truck door ajar light as well ?
I'll try spraying wd-40 on the hinges and let you all know what happens

Lxman is right, the most common causes is 'topping off' the tank, not tightening the gas cap (should click 3-4 times) or filling the tank with the engine running. As far as I know, you will need someone with a scanner to clear the memory codes set by the light. If it continues to be a problem, get a new gascap and check the evap emissions lines for leaks.
