OK, so Im going to do my best to describe what the noise sounds like, so bear with me. On acceleration I hear what sounds like small metal pieces being blown out of the exhaust, like a ******, *****, ******. Not everytime I accelerate, but probably 50-60% of the time, and not hard acceleration, I try to be light on the right foot for fuel mileage purposes. Truck is described in signature. Thanks in advance for the help.
Have you checked the bolts holding the turbo together. Some have a tendancy to loosen up and could cause the compressor wheel to come in contact with the housing. Due to the close tolerances, it wouldn't take much.
Don't know if this helps but I had an old Volvo that had somehow gotten a dent in the catalytic converter which broke the ceramic lining inside the darn thing. It made a funny noise but I can't remember what it sounded like. Hell, I don't even know if diesels have a catalytic converter. What kind of "Posting Guru" am I. I guess it just means I'm amazing at posting and has nothing to do with knowledge.
If it only happens while moving, I would start looking at Ujoints. Driveshaft and front axles. Also make sure the brakes aren't down to the warning tabs. I've done that before.
I am going through that now. Was told it might be the TC, but the flexplate ended up breaking right around the bolts on the crank. I have the transmission out now and will be installing that this weekend.
Is the wastegate lever disconnected from the actuator and the arm flapping around? You would have quite a power loss along with it because of no boost. I've seen that on a Passat gasser once and it made the exact same noise that you describe. I thought it was the turbo wheel hitting the housing, it wasn't the case. The wastegate valve was flapping around from all the noise created by the exhaust pulses.
Well, all of this is good information, but I really don't feel a loss in power nor a feeling that the engine is slipping. It doesn't seem to affect the performance of the truck at all, its just an aggravating noise. It does seem to happen more often when the truck is cold and I haven't had the truck long but it has been doing it since I started driving it in November when I got home from Iraq. Thanks for all the help guys.
