my buddy failed the cali smog test for the third time with his 351c. The test shows high CO2 what are the items that can be tuned and or replaced to fix this? we have decided to go ahead and get new cats, but is there anything else that should be checked.
I didn't think CO2 was part of passing a CA smog test and I thought high CO2 readings were desirable. If the cat is working properly, I'd say lowering the CO level should also reduce CO2.
I have 2 well detailed smog articles scanned, 11 pages total.
I can send them via email if interested.
has your buddy brought the vehicle to a shop that has a gas analyzer? they can adjust everything while reading the results and pretty much guarantee a pass. turning the screws without the equipment is like pissing into the wind in the dark. too much ignition advance will fill the exhaust pipe with HC's. IIRC too lean will send the CO reading off the scale? it's worth the price at the tune-up shop.
been to the tune up shops. all the ones out here are the legit type no one will adjust the car to any other specs than what the book says.so its been hard and frustrating
what did the shops say they could do? did they have a gas analyzer or just a timing light? if they worked on the vehicle and it failed they have some splainin to do.
If the Analyzer is tied into the State system I don't think it can fail 3Xs without causing some legal issues. Likely it was tested off-line first to see if it would pass.
I'm all in favor of clean air but I think for some, all the grief, anxiety and hardship caused by jumping through hoops for CARB does more damage to a person's health than the smog from their vehicles.
At one time they weren't. Fortunately I haven't had to deal with all that crap in over 10 years. One of the advantages of driving nothing but pre '75 vehicles.
Wow, things have sure changed since I left the Republik of Kalifornia back in '90. At the dealership I worked in we just put the ol' HC probe in the tailpipe and adjusted what we could until we were sure it would pass before we ran the test.
What vehicle has a 351C that requires cats? Is there no longer a repair $ limit that allows any vehicle which has the correct, functioning smog equipment on it but still won't pass to be exempted by a referee?
