Drive shaft length

I have a 95 f-250 with a 351 5.8L. I got it from my brother and the front passenger drive shaft was cut. I went to advance auto to get a new one but they told me that I needed to find out what length. How can I find out the length I the piece was removed

You're better off going the junkyard and getting one out of a Bronco with the same tranny. Then you know you'll have the right length.

There's a guide somewhere on how to tell which transmission. E4OD has "Metric" stamped into the pan at least sometimes. Shaft should be the same length for any truck with supercab and that transmission, I am assuming you have a supercab because you have a two part shaft. Better off to just take the shaft assembly to a good driveshaft/machine shop and just have them weld you up a new one. That way the whole assembly will be balanced.

No the truck is a regular cab. It is actualy i think three peices. It has one from the hub to the first u-joint then from that ujoint it goes back to brake and one slips into the other one witch in turn goes to the second u-joint. That is hot the one i had cut out was but it was cut not removed because it was chewing up the front end. I couldnt get the u-foint out do i had my brother cut it with his torches. So i cant have anothe one machined. But thatnks for the help.

Sorry about the Bronco comment - I must have thought I was in the Bronco forum.

Now I need to clarify something. A driveshaft goes between the transfer case and the differential. An axleshaft goes between the sides of the differential and the hubs. From your last post, it sounds like you are talking about an axleshaft, but I'm trying to be sure.

If you are talking about an axleshaft, then going into a parts store and asking for a driveshaft is not going to work very well for you. They are all the same length. Aftermarket is going to be expensive, again I suggest the junkyard.

Yeah the axle shafts are different between the 44 and the 50.

If it's a supercab, it's a Dana 50. If it has a snowfighter package, it's also a 50.

If you still can't tell, look at the hub in the front wheel. If the hub completely fills the opening, it's a Dana 50. A 44 will only partially fill the opening in the center of the wheel.

If you're replacing the inner passenger side shaft, you're going to have to drop the differential. The inner shaft on that side is retained with a clip inside the case. The driver's side will slide right out. The passenger side outer shaft will come off after you remove the boot over the slip joint.

From the transfer case a shaft sticks out to a u-joint. that is staying then from the inside out i need to replace the shaft(s) from that first u-joint to the second then to the hub. So will i still have to dropthe differential?
Thanks Dan

If you need to replace the inner u-joint on the right axle shaft, you need to drop the diff. There is a c-clip that holds the innermost part of the shaft in. Unless you can press them in and out with the shaft still in the truck.

When you said transfer case in your last post, did you mean to say differential? It's real tough to figure out what you're saying and answer questions when your terminology is wrong.
