Hi, New to the site so bear with me. I have a 99 explorer with 82,00 miles. The O.D light started flashing today. I have not had any shifting or slipping problems and everything seems to be working fine. Where should I start to look for the cause. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.
The Transmission goes into 'limp' mode when it senses something wrong.... the flashing O/D light is your indicator. Kind of an early warning system.
pull the negative battery cable and let it reset. If it comes back on, bring it in and have them see what's wrong. It could be trying to tell you there's something going wrong that you don't know about yet or it could just be a sensor.
As the previous post says, the trans goes into limp mode. It's not good to drive that way for an extended period of time as it causes the trans to hard shift abnormally. If possible, you might want to pull the codes before resetting them. Hopefully, once reset, the light will stay out.

Do yourself the favor and pull the codes before you pull the fuse to the computer (yes, the easy way) to reset the computer memory.
The tranny is bound to shift funny with the memory cleared, so why compound a likely true symptom? I don't hear too many, if any at all, false O/D light flashes...
