Tune up spec's

Computer melt down, lost tune up spec's.

Have a 70 Torino 302 in 65 F100. Upgraded to Electronic Ignition. Went with the Ford Duraspark ign. system. Chose model that was relative close to year and engine size, purchased parts for 76 Mustang ll from local NAPA dealership. Currently has the Autolite 45 plugs, unless another member suggest otherwise, will probably replace with same. Not sure of the plug gap, or timing setting. Further, the engine has approx. 6,000 miles and at what point should the valves be readjusted. Any information would be appreciated.

thank you,
dave

First of all, that engine should have hydraulic lifters which need no readjustment if properly preloaded when installed.

Stock plug gap for a '70 is .035, but the Duraspark uses a bigger gap so you'll want to open it up to .044. Stock timing is only 6º BTDC but I would try advancing it a bit. Set it till it just pings under load and then back off a hair.

Appreciate the info. You are right, there is no valve adjustment, they are preloaded. Just thought after period of time needed a readjustment. Purchased tune up parts from local supplier who was not much help with providing specs. Have couple Chilton's tune up guide books for Ford Mercury, Galaxie, and Vans. As close as I could get were spec's on a 78 with a 302 which called for a plug setting of .050, timing of 14B, at an idle speed of 650. Spec's on the Ford Van was on a 79 with a 302 and called for a gap of .044, and timing 16B, with idle speed at 650. Seemed to me the .050 gap and 16B, or even 14B was kinda far reaching so went out and set plugs at .044 and timing at around 10B, not sure, it was getting dark so will check the setting again tomorrow. So far, starts right up.

thanx again,
dave
