I have a 78 F150 2wd automatic w/ 351m(or 400). The ignition module metal housing is intact, and the wiring and connetors are ok, but the see thru wax type backing is melting onto my inner fenders. What causes this stuff to melt out? Does it mean I need a new Ignition Module?
Where are you located at? Down here in Oklahoma That glue melts out of modules on a regular basis! Especially if the module is mounted on it's side. Then it procedes to run down the inner fender making a real mess! All of the ones I have that are mounted on their side lost all of their "stuff" years ago, but have not failed yet.

Hmmmm....It should still work, huh? I'm in Owasso, Oklahoma. I noticed the leak this weekend while troubleshooting a sputtering problem with my engine. My truck has sputtered to a stop 3 times in the last three weeks. Each time, I was sitting at a stop light or sign for a few minutes and then when taking off the truck sputters and dies. After the first time I replaced the carb w/ a rebuilt 2bbl motorcraft. It sputtered to a halt twice with the new carb. Here's the list of all I've done to cure this problem. Have I missed checking anything else?
-New Carb
-New fuel filter
-New Fuel pump
-New Taylor 8mm wires
-New Accel 8140C coil
-Timing set to 12degrees btdc
-carb tuned to constant 19lbs suction
-water remover treatment with each tank of gas
-New Air filter
I was wondering if the ignition module melting backing could be a cause?
I ve never heard of the glue melting in an Ign module. I live in Louisiana and it gets HOT here in the summer! I would get another module, they arent too expensive at Auto Zone. Also check the wiring harness from the Ign switch to the coil. I had the wire from my ign switch to my coil pull halfway out and anytime the motor moved a certian way the motor would die. I fixed the wire and it fixed my problem!
Good Luck!

I spoke with a Borg-Warner Automotive engineer over the phone today. They have two different Ignition Control Modules for my truck. The CBE7P or CBE7. The P one is a stock replacement, and the CBE7 is a better grade replacement. I told him about the melting backing on the original module, and he said that would be caused by a bad resistor wire on the coil, or by having too low of a resistance on the primary. I'm not quite sure what that means, and he didn't have more time to talk. Are there any Ignition Module Experts on this forum?
