I have a 97 EB and when switching into 4 wheel drive ,everything seems to work fine except for 4 low. It does not engage at all. Does anyone know how to determine if it is the switch causing the problem or if it is the actual motor on the transfer case?
You could check the switch by checking to see if the transfer case motor has power when you switch to 4lo. If it is getting power, pull the motor and check to see if the motor is actually moving.
Ok, I was just checking, I know it took me reading the manual to figure that out on mine. I would have to agree that maybe it is the motor in the transfer case, if all other positions work on the switch with no trouble, I doubt the switch is bad. I think I do remember a post about someone removing and cleaning the excess dilectric (sp) grease off of the switch and that helping it to work.
Verify that the brake lights are coming on when the brake pedal is depressed. If they're not, the GEM may not recognize that the brakes are on, and prevent 4LO engagement.
The motor sends a feedback code when the motor makes 4low which turns the light on. If you do not have this light then the motor is not making the move. You also should be able to hear the relay clicking under the dash or behind the drivers seat post. If you do not hear the relay click, then you should check the gem if you do hear the relay, and still get no light the motor. But if you get light but no 4low, then its internal.
