I started my 92 F150 302/AOD 4x4 a few weeks ago and glanced down at the odometer. It had changed from roughtly 96k miles to just over 150k.
I realized later that the speedo was now way off as well and then I saw that the "miles" were ticking away awful fast so I checked the mile markers on the highway and sure enough I was doing about 10 for every 6 actual miles.
At that point I came up with the theory that my odometer had somehow changed over to kilometers from miles.
My guess is that ford used the same PSOM for both metric and US dash clusters. The difference is that there's probably an extra solder connection made for one of them. Perhaps a cold solder joint came undone on the PSOM circuit board and caused it to switch to metric. Unfortunetly the only way I can think of fixing it would be to dissect the speedometer (PSOM) and see if any tracing is labeled for "metric" or "us". Then perhaps try resoldering it. Not sure if a schematic is available for this or not.
Other options include looking on EBay for a dash cluster that has milage similar to what yours was and swapping it in. Lastly I think there is one company that will program a speedometer with any milage you want, not sure of their name however.
Lastly the Ford dealer might be able to do something with it. Although I'm guessing it will cost a "million billion" dollars.
Reset your speedo for miles. Do a search on speedometer calibration or tire size correction and you will see an option for miles or kilometers. Sounds like someone was playing with your reset button and converted you back to kilometers. NO, it is not a solder joint issue.
Machman - I found the instructions and it tells me how to tell if it's set to English or Metric, but not how to change the setting. Is there another set of instructions out there that I haven't found yet?
quicklook2 - I haven't been home to try that yet, sorry. I will try it tonight and reply with the results. I was just looking for some form of documentation that would mention the setting which the calibration article does. It just doesn't tell me how to change it.
quicklook2 - No go. I tried it and it doesn't seem to do anything different than just holding the reset button and turning the key on.
First I turned the key on , pressed and released the reset button, turned key off, then started vehicle. Nothing.
Second I turned key on, pressed and held the reset button , turned key off and then started vehicle. Displays "o 3", which confirms it's in overseas mode, but I couldn't find any combination of reset and select button presses to turn the o into an E.
Have you tried calling up a local dealer and asking them how to do it? If you ask enough people, you might get someone willing to help you for free. Don't let anyone charge you to do it. If you know how, it's got to be about a 10 second thing to fix.
below your glove box is a single terminal connector. you need to use a wire to ground this out.
key to run while holding down the odo reset button, than release button.
speedo will sweep across dial.
the english/metric and revision number will display, the last number is the lockout count, when it is zero it cannot be changed again.
press and release reset button again and psom convrsion constant (without the decimel point ) followed by the word CAL will be displayed
press and release the odometer select button as many times as neccesary to change conversion constant to the correct value.
note: pressing and releasing the reset button to lock in the new conversion constant reduces the # of times by 1. if you change your mind turn the key off before you lock in new constant
when correct value is displayed in odo windowpress and release the reset button to lock in new conversion constant
Still looking for an answer to this question..I hooked up the ground wire and entered program mode and then tried pressing the select button instead of reset (reset takes me to changing the conversion constant), but nothing seems to change it from overseas mode to english mode. Anyone?
As you said in that post, there is no reference in those instructions to changing from metric to english. I have found those same instructions on 3 other websites and none of them mention how to change from metric (overseas) to english. Do you know specifically how to change from metric to english? I tried pressing the select button instead of the reset button before getting to the conversion constant and nothing happens. If I then press the reset button, it simply takes me to the conversion constant setting mode.
