Yes they are, but you have to use good common sense and hopefully get a set of guages to monitor temps as you add HP. If you don't tow or tow below 5000-7000 LBS you can run most anything in the low and middle settings, BUT and I mean BUT without gauges you have no way to see what is happening etc. The Diablo Predator is a great one to start with as is the Superchips 1705 or 1805. Give us a call, we'll be glad to help you with questions etc. By the way you migh want to get an AFE Pro Guard & filter element to keep the dirt out of your engine, the 4 layer filters just aren't up to that task on a diesel.
Go With A Multi Position Flip Chip...... You Wont Be Sorry......
One Good Thing About Most Tuners/programmers Though ... Is That With A Tuner Or Programmer You Can Use Them As A Code Reader Also.
I Still Use My Old Scmt For Code Reading.
Diablo and Superchips won't support the T/C in your 2001 properly. You'll lose engine breaking whenever the brakelights are active. Either Edge EVO or a custom chip.
The 6637 filter is cheap enough, then there is the walker btm. I have both. Cost right about $100.
Guages are important and cool to watch. I did the intake, exhaust, and guages about the same time, and it makes more of a differance then i thought it would.
A mild tune gives good economy and gets rid of that annoying flat spot between shifts. Once you start, you'll want more. Anything on the extreeme and you will find out like i did about turbo stall.
I recently ordered the diablo predator due to the reviews that the tuner recieved on this forum. I am 100% satisfied with it. I have only gone as high as 60 hp ( I am ordering gauges later this week so I can go higher), and the differance is night and day. I can't believe that it is the same truck. I have also seen a 1-2 MPG gain if I can manage to keep my foot out of it and the smoke out of the ricer's window!

The Diablo should be perfect for a 2000 or earlier like yours. Wait till you muster up the currage to try the 100hp tune! Got gauges?
I guess I don't quite understand everyone's issues with the torque convertor unlocking when hitting the brakes....Sorry to hijack the thread.
I have a 2001 and when I drive to work and back I have 4 interstate exits that I have to take a day. When decelerating, first I turn off the cruise (with the brake pedal) and the TC stays locked. Then once I get from 75 MPH to 60 MPH I manually downshift to 3rd (OD button), the convertor unlocks then the transmission downshifts. One second after that, the convertor clutch re-applies and stays locked until I reach exactly 30 MPH regardless of how long I have the brake pedal applied (which isn't long....I can't stand people who ride the brakes).
i notice my evolution doesnt lock the T/C up on deceleration any different that what Cleatus12R said. if OD is on, it drops out and idles at 39mph on decel. if OD is off, it lowers that to 23mph.
Oh, I forgot to mention that I did take the Snap-on scanner home with me to verify torque convertor on/off..... I know for a fact from what the PCM is commanding that the T/C is staying locked.
Cleatus, that's how it should be. The diablo will unlock it any time the brake lights come on. According to superchips microtuner tech support i was told your unit works the same as the predator. Glad to hear for you that they were wrong.
strokinit, that's the reason i traded in my diablo for the edge evo. works like a charm and i'm very pleased with it. too bad it doesn't do everything else the predator does.
