hi, i have a 2001 ford 250 V10, this has been a question taht me and my buddies have debated about multiple times. Can i put straight pipes on my truck, like no cat no muffler no anything, without f'ing it up. i'm not worried about gass mileage. They say that i have to get a chip to bypass some stuff, i just want someone who actually knows to answer this question, instead of my pesky friends. PLease Help!!
you will need to retain the cats for the engine management system to work right, there is no way to bypass the o2 sensors. also straight pipe sounds dumb on the v-10 because of its unique firing order. i think it is 70 or 75 degrees compared to a v-8 which is 90 degrees.
My '01 w/Cali emissions (NY requires it) does NOT HAVE the O2 sensor AFTER the cat.
I believe later years have the after-cat O2 sensor.
My '01 recently failed the NY emissions test because the O2 sensor monitors hadn't passed. Required a different model pick from the list, passed immediately.
I'm just wondering how much power the cat really sucks up? I take a VERY dim view of people removing their cats for no reason, given I live in a Metro area. I still remember the wonderful smell of gasoline exhaust from the 70's. Doesn't smell like that anymore around here - thankfully - because of the increased emissions regulation.
For a 2001 non-CA emissions truck, there is an 02 sensor at each manifold... BEFORE the cat. You can remove the cat, muffler & piping without setting any codes or experiencing any driveability issues. At least it didn't on my '01 when I fired it up with open headers.
Now, as for the "should you?" question, I say no. The cat doesn't restrict flow enough to cost any real HP. So, if it's not clogged or damaged, leave it on.

As far as screwing up the truck - NO.
As far being able to stay in the truck while cruising down the road - NO
I think the roar would not only rattle your brain, but it might shake loose a few bolts, too...
so all in all, i can do it, its just wether i want it loud or not, which i do, i'm just worried about the truck taking a poop on me and costing some money, so the final verdict is that I CAN? and i wont F anything up? i doubt it would be all that loud anyways, my friend has a v8 with 3 inch straight pipes with 3 1/2 in tips, and thats not too bad, i come from a hick town wheer all a man needs is a beer, some hot wings, and a loud truck
i'm not worried about horepower really, i just get a woody when i hear loud trucks.. lol, gotta love it
Well, then:
Get some 4" tips on those straight pipes about 4 foot long. Have you ever rigged up dampers with bearings? About 6 inches from the outlet of the tips drill horizontal holes in each one - about 1 inch in diameter. Get some 1/2" diameter drill rod 6 inches long and install bearings on each side of the tips. Then fab up a damper plate and stick it up inside the tip. Then, with a stick rod, tac the damper to the drill rod - you will need 8018 Low Hydrogen rods for this. That way you can cut down on the roar a little.
Seriously - have you ever heard a Triton V10 with open straights before? It ain't just LOUD, it's deafening...

Before I installed my duals I drove my truck for awhile with no muffler, no cat, no tailpipes. The engine knew something was missing, but the PCM didn't. I don't think I'll ever do that again...
Big Orn, there is a difference between open headers and a straight pipe, i no better than to just run open headers, that could cause dammage, i think with a tailpipe though it should not screw anything up
Before you do it, make ABSOLUTELY SURE there is no O2 sensor after the cat.
I've conversed with people on here, a few years ago now, that reported having that third O2 sensor, believe it or not. And yes, they were 2002 and before.
If you don't have the third O2 sensor after the cat, go for it and report back!
