The 7.3 in my 1988 truck is having some starting problems. I know I need a new set of glow plugs, but even after I get the engine warmed up, its still hard to start. If I let it sit for more than 10 minutes, I have to cycle the glow plugs at least twice before it will crank easily.
Whats weird is the engine will spin over fairly slow, then, it starts spinning faster and faster as it gets ready to start? It doesn't have a miss, like its trying to start that makes it spin faster, its like the batteries start off weak, then get stronger the more you spin the starter. Its weird. The batteries are brand new also.
make sure the connections to the batteries are clean and corrosion free. Also, make sure you have enough oil in the crankcase. If it is very low, it won't lubricate properly, but as the engine spins it will splash and then spin easier. How cold is it where you are? If it is cold, that will affect the viscocity of the oil making it spin hard too.
You probably have a bad connection in the battery cables somewhere.
The resistance of the bad connection makes heat that expands the metal and makes the connection better as it cranks.
Right after it starts the bad place will be hot to the touch.
