Toward the end of November, my wife was climbing into our '04 F150 when a gentleman approached her, put a 10 inch survival knife to her stomach and said give me the keys or die. She complied (as she should have in this situation) and the gentleman quickly sped off in the truck at full throttle. Needless to say this was very traumatic for her.fficeffice"<O:p</O:p
The truck was spotted by the police about two weeks later. During the ensuing police chase, the truck was trashed. After $6K in repairs, it was finally returned. The Police detective tells me it was used in multiple crimes and shared among several individuals after it was stolen.<O:p</O:p
It occurred to me that a hidden ignition cut off switch may have prevented it from being stolen. If the situation ever occurred again, one would simply hand the keys over, run to a safe area, and watch the perpetrators frustration. Of course he may be looking down the barrel of a 9mm lead dispenser at that point as well.
I am curious if anyone on this forum has installed an ignition cut off switch and could give me the particulars of the installation.
<O:p</O:pThanks in advance for any help on this subject<O:p</O:p
i have one in my jeep, just a toggle on the ignition. unfortunatly for me, i havent been able to make a habit of using it, and when i do, i always freak out when the truck doesnt start. It works good, and would be a great deterent in that aspect. I installed it when i found out my insurance would be less. Im sorry for what happened to your wife, and your truck. That is truly horrible. Hopefully there will be some justice.
The only problem is if you had the disabled ignition switch, your wife may have been hurt! One I would look for if there is any such animal is one that lets the would be thief start it up, and drive 50 feet and then lock out. This would give your wife or anyone else to get out of the way. Next time it could be a gun!
I've put a switch on my previous trucks, but haven't this one yet. Also, several places make carjacking kits, I have one from Jacobs Electronics. Car quits after short distance down the road, so thief is far enough away.
i would have to say it is not worth it. the perp may have gotten more violent and besides its just a object he stole which is replaceable, your wife is not.
Actually putting a kill switch on a timer wouldn't be that bad and actually easy to do. Just set it so that you have to hold a momentary toggle or foot switch in while turning the ignition...if you dont have the timer time out for like 30-40 secs and then kill the engine. Not too hard to do if ya have basic electrical knowledge and shouldn't run you more then 100 in parts.
