Post To rebuild or inspect & replace

I have a 87 F150 160k thats down on power and never had an oil change so its hurt. I just got two 302s from this guy that I don't really know. One of the 302s is "Out of a 93 Mustang w/100k on it" the other is an "Ex-Police car milage unknown" so without knowing if they even run what should I do to find out if I can freshen one up or do I need to rebuild it. I want to pull the pan and take a look, so what do I look for? If poss I would like to put an oil pump rear main and take the cheap way out. Or buy an overhual kit? Should I replace the pistons or can I just ring an bearing it and put it right back together? I dont have much money so it would be a garage deal so how cheap can I do this? I think I need to put the truck cam in it right? Can I use my lifters, pushrods, and rockers on the newer mustang heads even if I don't rebuild it? Do I need to put cam bearings if I do?

Sorry so long, Joe

Personally I'd pull the heads on both 302's and see which is in better shape. If one looks good check-change the bearings, new oil pump, timing chain, cam if yours is worn, lifters, seals.

My old truck cam and lifters will work if it looks ok right, just change the cam bearings. I have all the mass air also I plan on putting it in with a new cam, and lifters down the road I just need to buy myself time. Now what engine kit should I buy? Its an 87 4x4 w/a late model HO long block as you all know, so I need intake, exhaust, oil pan, and water pmp/timing cover gaskets for the truck, along w/HO gaskets for the bottom end. Now do rod & main bearings, w/no rings or would you do rings? I guess that depends how the cyl look. What is the brand oil pump, gaskets, and timing chain you guys would use?

Sorry for so many questions, I just really need this to come together and be a good running truck on a budget.
Thanks, Joe

I got the truck from a buddy who said it needs an engine bcause he never maintianed it and it wouldnt run... When I got it it had no power and would over heat. I put plugs wires thermostat cap bla bla bla...
Now the truck runs a lot better and doesnt over heat however when it gets hot it starts running bad and loses power. The engine light is on the oil press gauge doesnt work so I cant if its low. If the truck is at an idle in neutral and you let the clutch out the rpms drop. Could this engine just be in need of bolt on stuff to get running right or is it time to junk it? If I could just band aid back together that would be better for me at this time rather then rebuilding the engine we have been talking about already.

Where would I get an Idle air block off plate, the kind you manualy adjust? I remember putting one on one of my mustangs yrs ago.
