Should i put new piston rings and bearings in a 302 that has been sitting a while that i just bought?
If so, i have 2 sets of original Pistons, flat tops and dished, which is better?
To put in new rings you'll need to hone the cylinder - you'll need the correct diameter piston too.
Flat/dish doesn't matter for which is "better"...all it does is change the compression ratio. The type of piston, cast, hypereutectic, or forged will be the determinant of which is "better".
I have the correct piston size, the pistons came out of the engine, only reason i would want to put new rings on is because i'm going to be driving this truck/engine 800 miles and i just bought it. I'm going to put new bearings in and might as well do the piston rings as well. Do Flat pistons have higher compression then dished?
Why not just have the block done by a local machine shop and rebuild it? Not that much more work and you'll have a nice bottom end ready for thousands of miles.
I'm not made of money....and the engine isn't in that bad of shape acutally, little to no ring grove. Jeff even said that all i needed to do was hone it out and put new piston rings in and i'm going to go ahead and put bearings in. Plus, this engine was a Mercruiser Marine block and it wasn't really used all that much till lately. Unless a machine shop is cheap but last i checked it woulda been too much.....
