Question need distributor - rotor alignment ?help?

I took out my single vac adv. distributor and free'd up the vac advance plate (which was stuck). I marked the distributor placement, but forgot to note which way the rotor pointed. Since I have tried to start it. I was a VW guy and figure there is a certain way it should point with the engine at TDC, just don't know if there is a mark or not. Thanks for the quick answer, as I am trying to get it back on before dark.

OK - got it running, but dont have a timing light, any tips. I have been moving it back and forth going with what sounds best. It is backfiring out of the carb - too advanced? Advancing is turning dist. clockwise-right?

yup, advance is clockwise. do you know anyone with a timing light? with the engine at #1 TDC, the rotor should be pointing to about the 1:00 position and the advance can should be pointing about straight forward(6:00 position).

point vac advance to front of motor and rotor button towards #1(1st cylinder on right) with piston on compression stroke. That should get you in the ball park...
