I am the recent recipient of a 1986 F350 with the 6.9 Diesel. It has a 4 speed manual transmission. I keep reading posts with info about different axle ratios. How do I identify which ratio I have?
Look for a tag under a bolt on the rear cover.
The bolt head usually covers the first number of the lower line of numbers.
You should be able to see .55 or .10 as the first digits.
You may see L55 or L10 as the first digits which would be a limited slip.
Thanks! I am sure I will have a ton more questions about the tranny and what to expect in terms of RPMs and mileage when I do finally start driving it. This was a 'gift' and it seems to me that it is well worth my time to get it running. If anyone has an opinion on that, I have a page with a brief description and some pics here: http://www.weitemeyer.net/family/mark/f350/
The air cleaner says Banks Power Pack on it. I was eventually going to ask about that and the Banks exhaust that I am told was installed on the truck. I have not had a chance to talk in depth about the truck with the previous owner so I do not know the details. The previous owner was not a hands on kind of guy, more the take it to the mechanic and write a check sort so he may not know the details anyway.
Interesting. BTW, congrats on the new rig. Crew cab duallys are fun, you out size any other pickup on the road.
If the previous owner was having hard start problems then you might need to do some glow plug work. Not a big deal, lots of help and info here. You should ask him if it was hard to start when the engine was hot or cold. That will help you determine if the problem is with the glow plugs or with the injector pump.
185K is nothing, that 6.9 is just broke in.
