I have a 06 F150 5.4, 4x4, and its a really quit truck but after about 60mph I'm getting a whistling sound from the front area (maybe from the ventilation grill on the hood area) that seems to get worse with increasing speed. I've tried the a/c with it in recycle mode on and off with no difference. I know this is not going to be simple to find but I hate to think I've got to run my radio all the time. Also the front lic. plate holder is installed with no plate on it ,anybody have a problem with this making a noise. Thanks for any help.
I have a high pitched whistle that starts @ about 60 ('06 XLT Scab). It becomes a little more pronounced the faster you go. Volume of the sound is low. But with the radio tuned off you can hear it.
It's louder with the wind is hitting the right side of the cab. I don't think it's from the vents or the windshield. I think it's coming from the right passenger door. I have not had a chance to investigate it. But, I think it's coming from the weatherstripping around the door, up high.
I have folded the mirrors, no change.
I don't think it's the antenna. The wire wrap on it is supposed to eliminate that type of noise...
It sounds like your problem is coming from the gap between the windshield and the roof. There was a very long thread on this a few months ago although I cannot remember the title. I think there may be a TSB but the solution was along the lines of filling the gap with silicone.
Wildcard30, I was wondering if you found anything? I've done searches in the past with limited luck.
I also have this really annoying wind noise @ 50+ mph. Noticed it right after I bought the truck ('05 Screw 4x4 XLT 5.4) in May '05. Had it back to the dealer in October and they did a couple of TSB adjustments, but did not work. I have noticed that if the wind is blowing left-to-right, the noise is much worse than the other way around. Also if there is a tail wind, there is no noise. Worse when it is colder out.
Another thing that I noticed was while changing the oil in December, the dealership left the long rubber seal/gasket that goes in front of the cowl / back of the engine compartment off. (It was sitting on top of the radiator plastics in a nice grove, almost looked like it belonged there) So I put it back and I swear the wind noise got a liitle louder as it seemed to quiet a bit after it was at the dealer last Oct.
So I was just wondering if anyone has any new info, maybe an actual fix before I have to start taping things and experimenting myself....Thanks.

This puts it into words better than I did. Thanks.
Can the noise be produced with the truck parked and reving the engine. I had a truck once that did alot of what is being talked about. After a while, I had someone rev the truck with my head in the engine compartment. I found a bad head gasket that was leaking and making the noise when moving down the road. I would hear it only at certain speeds. It drove me nuts for about 6 months until I found what it was. May having nothing to do with what is happening to your trucks but just a thought.

I did try putting 2" wide green glass tape all around my window seal and it did not change anything. I also found out that the service manager at the local dealer also has this same problem and he has an '04 Screw XLT 4x4 and has not been able to fix it. Says he has done a bunch of stuff and even taken the front cowl off with no luck. This annoying whistle sure seems to be a mystery...
did anyone have this problem before winter? maybe the cold has something to do with it
No, the problem is all year long. But it is less noisy in the summer than when it is cold out in the winter.
Drove the truck into work this morning with a pretty stong side wind and it was quite noticable, it was about 26 degrees out. So I decided to stop by the Ford dealer to make an appointment for a broken cup holder and the service manager was sitting behind the desk. After we made an appointment for the cup holder, he asked me if my wind noise was still there before I could ask if there was anything new on it. So he said he will do some looking again as the truck is scheduled to go in on Monday. He said his '04 is still noisy and still suspects it is something with the cowl or underside of the hood. It sure sounds like it is coming from the lower - center part of the windshield. Almost like it is coming in from under the hood through the grill or something.
Got an update: The truck went to the glass shop. They put a bunch of sealant under the top window seal>> No change. So they taped the seals all around the entire window, took the cowling off, took the wipers off, taped the side mirrors, the drivers door, and even where the hood and grill meet>> No change.
The whistle is there with or without the bug shield or antennae.
So it is not the windshield or the seals/molding, it is coming from somewhere else. Sure sounds like it is coming from the bottom, center area of windshield; Almost as if it is coming through the engine compartment. I thought about taking cardboard and zip tying it to the grill and covering the entire front of the truck just to see if it changes. That ought to be a sight cruising down the highway! :>)
Let us know what happens. I have not taken mine to the dealer yet...
It could be that you (we) are hearing the wind thru the engine compartment entering somewhere in the cab. Maybe a misfitted body plug or along one of the wire bundles coming into the cab.
