i had that problem to they switched out the drivers mirror, might have been an unseen crack or something i dont know but he knew what i was talking about and got me a new one. now i can faintly hear it from the passenger side with the windows open but since i dont sit over there, i dont care enough to go get another mirror.

blitzen25bm, so you had the same symptoms that we have described earlier in the thread.....Sounds like the whistle is coming from the lower, center of windsheild? Does folding the mirrors in change it any? Thanks for the info!

Cool Wind noise/Whistle

Hello-

I posted the same concerns on my '05 F150 Lariat a few months ago. The dealer told me that this was normal, and I told him to fix it. They lowered the headliner, and put in sealer at the leading edge with no luck. As per others, certain days has louder noise due to the wind direction and wind speed, and this noise increases from 45mph up . It sounds like the top of the windshield , but also from the base of the windshield. Very annoying. My friend has a '04 Lariat with a lot less wind noise. Mirrors are not the issue, nor is the bug shield, as this truck was noisy since day one . That story about the rest of the truck being so quiet doesn't have anything to do with it, believe me! Maybe it is the noise from the cowl/engine compartment? Anybody have other suggestions? It would be nice to fix this, as more people have this issue than some realize. Thanks

Dave Christo

i just heard the noise when the windows were open so it couldnt have been a windshield leak.

Had the same problem a little over a year ago and the dealer tried the same repair (dropping the headliner and sealing from inside the truck). Like on yours, this did nothing to lower the wind noise. I figured out that the noise was coming from the gap between the windshield and the black metal trim piece at the top of the windshield by putting a piece of masking tape over the gap. The noise went away completely so I ran a very small bead of black silicone sealant in this gap and the wind noise has been gone for over a year now.

Wink

The truck went back in today to get a malfunctioning cup holder (the one in the dash) replaced and we got to talking about the whistling noise. I was told that they will give me a call when the regional Ford rep is there to take a look/listen at the truck. Guess we'll see what happens. Maybe the magical fix is near ...

I notice the wind noise more on passenger side front (04 SCab Lariat) when it is cold outside. I have not had time to investigate.

I was in the dealer today for my first free oil change. Talked to them about the noise and of course they never heard of such a thing. Anyway when I got home I did the black silicone thing but still have the noise. Hope to hear something new soon. Thanks to everyone for there feedback.

is coming from the windshield due to inproper sealant
i had mine back at the dealer 7 times

still no luck, and dealer to me is normal, (funny)
so i took it to the lemon law
is in the process now, almost been a year
you guys should save all the service order and file a lemon law against ford

Well, finally got to the bottom of my wind whistle. Dealership had it for 2 days, removing things and taping everything off. Turns out it was my none stock antennae. Now I know what everybody is thinking, but I have to cut the antennae down so the truck will fit in the garage without it smacking the garage door / windows. I have a tuck under garage and the truck clears by about 3 inches. I also bought a cheap replacement so I would not have to ruin the OEM one. Worked fine on the '03 F250 it was on prior to this one.

Now when I first took the truck in last May for the noise, I informed them that I put the bug shield on and also swapped the antennae for garage fit. They said they would be more than happy to look at the truck, but if they found out that it was 1 of the 2 none stock items, it would not be covered by warranty...OK. So I took the bug shield off and put the stock antennae back on and took it in, still whistling....Go figure.

When I was talking to the ServMgr about the issue, he said he remembered going for a ride with me last May with everything stock and even remembered why I had a different antennae. My theory is that the 3 previous times the truck was in and they did everything they could to the windshield area without replacing it, they fixed something and we were dealing with 2 different, possibly related issues.?.? It sure seemed like the whistle got louder between messing with the windshield and finding the antennae issue.

So long story longer, I grabbed the OEM antennae, cut it to fit, and there is no more whistle. I owe the service dept big time for this one as they could have dinged me in the pocket book, but were very good sports about the whole thing.

I also found out what my whistle is...

Windshield wipers...

I removed them last weekend and magically, the sound is gone.

Last time it was at the dealer they checked the noise and said they could not hear it...

It would appear my passenger side wiper is deformed. The top of the frame is bent outward and up.

I will show it to the dealer next time I'm in and have them replace it...

I saw a post about whilisting and wind noise in truck enthusiasts. The fellow used masking tape to find the noise by installing and removing around the rubber seal. He found out putting some self sticking foam insulation where the windshield and door meet (at rubber flap) took care of the problem. I have not tried this yet but I also have a whistle now and then sounds like mine is in the drivers side upper door. I wish I could tell you where I saw the post but you might look under wind noise. I do know he posted some pictures of his truck and where he put the patch. He said it took care of the problem.

I just purchased my truck (Late Feb 06) and noticed a high pitched whistle while driving in head winds at 60+MPH or regardless of wind direction when over 70MPH.
The first thing I did was search online where I found and read through all the topics on the subject but haven't seen any clear answers as to what the problem is.
I then contacted Ford directly (via online form) but they told me to go see the dealer (even though I told them that no customers experiencing the problem were helped by their dealer). So I plan to go to my dealer soon and start the complain process.
I decided to do some investigating of my own as to the cause before I take it in so I bought some masking tape over at HD (make sure it is NOT the strong adhesive kind! I used the low adhesive kind and still had residual glue in some places that I had to clean with WD40) and taped up various sections that I thought could be causing the whistle. I tried one section at a time, mostly concentrating on upper passenger side as that is were the sound seems to be coming from. I swear I used half a roll of tape and STILL couldn't get the noise to stop. I even added tape to the antenna to no avail. I also removed the wipers. Still whistle was present. So I'm just letting everyone know that I'm also having this problem and would love to hear if anyone has definitively solved it and what the remedy is. I'm taking mind into the dealer next week however I'm not hopeful they will be able to solve it.

high speed whistle

Here is an update. Short version: The dealer seems to think that the problem is the Sirus Satellite antenna that is mounted on my roof. In the exact words of my service rep: "it disrupts the natural airflow along the roof." He said he would call me back once he could find a different place to put it. I told him to put it anywhere he wanted or remove it completely as I'd rather have a whistle-free truck than satellite radio (i'm a talk radio guy anyway). Well, they called me back later and started back peddling (paraphrasing):
Ford: "well, we think it is bolted on to the roof and we can't remove it. You need to take it to a body shop"
Me: "But you said that adding it disrupted the natural flow of air across the roof. so you guys should fix it"
Ford: "Well we don't install it, Ford does before they send the car to us"
Me: (thinking that isn't entire factual, probably some aftermarket firm contracted by Ford, but anyway)
Ford (continues): "Oh and btw, I (service rep) drop it around and didn't hear the whistle"
Me: "Yeah but you said your techs DID hear it earlier when they tested it, right?"
Ford: "Oh yeah, I guess I wasn't driving fast enough... there was a lot of traffic. Why don't you come down and drive another one. Probably all of them with the sat. anntena do the same thing."
Me: "What difference does it make? And besides, I doubt they all do as only a segment of users are/is complaining about it. Probably has to do with exact positioning of the antenna."

I was getting no where with the service guy so I went in later that night and talked to the manager of the service area. He was much more understanding (and sympathetic) of my problem. He didn't believe that the antenna couldn't be moved and said that even if they had to take it off they could probably seal up the holes pretty good. He then asked me to contact his main radio tech today and follow-up with him. I'll keep everyone posted on what happens.

The horrifying thing about all this is what if it ISN'T the antenna? What if i move it somewhere else or get dir of it completly and STILL have the whistle/whinning sound at speeds? THen what?

Quick Poll: How many of you that posted about this whistle/noise have or don't have the satellite antenna dohicky mounted to their roof?
