I recently bought a '88 Ford F250 with a blown 7.3L. It had a turbo on it, an AiResearch TO4. To me this turbo looks way to small for this engine. Does anyone know where I can find some specifications on this turbo? parts?
Will I need to disassemble it to measure some internal parts?

Is it AiResearch or Air Research?
Air Research is an older Garrett (AlliedSignal) name.
Try googling for Garrett T04 and see what comes up. Although I am inclined to agree about the size...any turbo will work, but sizing it properly provides the best effeciency. I don't know how much air a 7.3 diesel needs, though.
As for rebuilding it, it can be time consuming, but is not difficult...perhaps frederic here can offer advice (if your nice! He's a busy man!) about doing it, as I believe he recently rebuilt one for his twin-turbo project.
Thanks for the reply. It is spelled AiResearch. I started taking it apart today. I'm thinking I measure the compressor wheel and turbine and take close measurment of the A/R. Then maybe use that info to get a model or generic type serial number.
I did find the Garret web site, and they sell turbo models labeled TO4 but so does Turbonics. Is TO4 just a generic name?

Hmm...well, the majority of the internet agrees that Air Research = AiResearch = Garrett. The TO4 is a size label. Being a AR/Garrett is good news, because they were designed modularly, making replacement parts much easier to locate.
Another thing you might do is read up on properly sizing the turbo (to make sure that one is what you need). Engine Master's had a fairly in-depth arcticle about it on the Hot Rod website, that might give you some tips, before you go through a lot of work, to no avail.
The TO4B may be the right size for the engine. The turbo is going to have to be smaller than the ones found on the PSD 7.3s because the N/A 7.3s cannot handle alot of boost. I believe 8-10 pounds is the limit because of the high compression ratio. Let someones else chime in before you take my word on this as I am not completely sure.
