I want to go to an after market air filter without the box that is stock---Three problems.
Two vacuum hoses go into that box in the rear of it, and an electronic wiring harness plugs into the black plastic assembly....How do i go to an after market filter like a K/N and still have the vacuum hoses, and wiring harness, which when i unplug makes the check engine light stay on. I'd like to upgrade but sometimes it's hard.
You didn't tell us the model or engine size of your truck so an answer is difficult. I don't know of any vacuum lines or electronics associated with the airbox on most Rangers. Ford, in it's infinite wisdom, moved the MAS from the air tube to the top of the air box on my '04, maybe that's the plug you describe. I had a large air tube with a big K&N cone on my '99 and noticed very little difference from stock.

It's a 1991 ranger xlt super cab v6 4.0 there are two vacuum hoses going into the back of filter box. There is also a electronic plug that plugs into an aluminum cap just befor eth box--which if i unplug my check engine light comes on. There is also a oil cooler hose that comes off the area to the oil filler cap. How do i get around these to go to a after market air like a K/N or other full around air filter right off the engines air intake.
check out www.ifab.net i bought my intake from there. They just said to plug the 2 vacumme lines, and mine didnt have the electric wires going to it, but i'm assuming those are for you IAT sensor, and you can just relocate that somewhere else in the intake.
