Maybe the Leaf Spring is Broken

Bad ride and rear axle wrap might mean a leaf spring is broken or loose or some other suspension bit is no longer mounted like it should be. A visual inspection might uncover something.

www.RockAuto.com has ACDelco and Monroe shocks for the 1983 Ford Diesel. Find your truck, look under suspension and hit the More Info tab to learn about the relevant air shock, 4x4 shock, 2X4 shock, etc that you need. We also carry leaf spring axle bushings and other suspension parts for your truck. Good luck with the repair.

the springs could be week and they could have put them in there to get the ride hight back up or they were trying to stiffen up the fround end in truns

You might look for "helper" springs in the back too.

If the front springs were sagging enough to need blocks inserted, then a previous owner may have also put helper springs in the back to help tired rear springs or to carry extra heavy loads. Look for aftermarket springs u-bolted to the top of the rear axle on both sides.

My personal experience has been that blocks in the front springs don't change the ride much, but heavy duty helper springs in the back can make for a rough ride when the truck bed is empty; no matter what shape the shocks are in.

You can raise the truck and take off both the front spring blocks and any rear helper springs and see if you like the ride better. Re-install them if you like it better the way it was.

theyre not like a block they look like a bolt actually, theyre hex in shape and theres only on on each spring, i think, but they dont go all the way through the other side. I dont have my digital camera with me at the moment its up in dallas with my mom but when she gets back ill snap some ppics and maybe yall could determine what they are. And no theres no helper springs in the back.

You can buy those things at some auto parts stores.

Looks like a nut with a big spiral thread on the other end.
You install them between the coils on a coil spring to raise the spring back to original height. Some people install them to raise the vehicle above stock ride height.

Not very good though, hit a big bump and they can fall out.

My guess is the front springs are sagging and the truck frame is hitting the bumper blocks when you hit big bumps.

Thanks dave, so a solution to the problem would be some new springs?
