Pardon me if already posted: I purchased a 1979 F250 351m/5.8L with a supposedly bad C6. I've got a C6 but am having trouble id'ing it. Some research shows that 390s with tranny years through 95 are probably compatible, but the parts yard markings show "2000", "4k", and "Ford C6". Could I get some help the vehicles a fair piece from here and the yard wants me to take it out to tell.
The 390 belongs to the FE engine series and the trans will not work behind a 351M/400. A 429/460 shares the same bell housing as the 351M/400, so a 429/460 trans will work. Hope this helps.
Jack, As Kevin was saying, The C6 is made in three bell patterns, the FE (round top) The 42/460-351M (top bolts about 8" apart) and the I6, 302, 351W (top bolts about 4 1/2" apart)
I would suggest that first of all find out what the problem is. I would fix the tranny in the truck. It fits.

In the cool still quiet of night you can hear chevies rusting away.
With these details I'll be able to identify the new one. If it fits, I'll swap it out. The one in it fits of course, but repairs are costly unless one does it themselves.... still, I'm tempted to try .
Hi crawlfish Ken here, if your serious about overhauling your C6 yourself I may be able to help you. I made a video on overhauling the C6 trans. a few years ago which I've posted for sale in this web sites classifieds. I just got a email saying when my ad is reviewed or something it will get posted. The video is two hours long and I show the tools that are needed, bolt pattern ID.,disassembly, inspection, adjustments, some helpful tips and reassembly. If you have any questions me know....Ken.
Is this something I can do? Everyone I knows says you can rebuild a manual but not an automatic, but I have a book, that with a good video, might be the ticket. How much and where can I order this, and what's the full scoop on specialty tools, how many, what, and approx cost of the job? Can you help me get a feel for the overall costs. I'd still do it if within my means, even if cost exceeds shop prices. thanks..... crawlfish1@home.com
