I have an 2005 f150 super crew Lariet 5.4 L with 9000 miles. When the truck is cold and put into gear with your foot on the break a humming sound comes from the rear end. This sound occurs in drive or reverse and stops when your foot leaves the break or the truck warms up. I think it might be a heat shield. Any Ideas?
I was going to say that it sounds like that might be a vibrating heat shield or skid plate.
When I was about to do my first oil change I noticed a very slight humming or rattling sound from the front end. Turned out to be this little 1/4" diameter pebble stuck between the front skid plate and the frame crossmember. Who'd a thunk?
I'd suggest you crawl under there while the vehicle is in the condition you described above - with someone at the wheel that you trust of course, and get an earful. Once you're under there you should be able to localize the sound pretty well.

Finally, I found someone that has the EXACT same humming noise as my truck does. I frequent the other big f150 site, and I've been searching for a fix for upwards of a year. I've posted several threads asking for help/suggestions. Alot have said rattling heat sheilds or fuel pump, but neither have checked out for me. I've literally spent several hours under/over/in/out of my truck searching for the sound... Needless to say, I'm still searching...
Nate, have you had any luck with your truck??? Please let me know. Thanks...
I haven't been to the dealer yet to have the sound checked out. I did crawl under the truck and attempt to locate the sound but that turned out to be unsucessful. Have you tried the dealer yet?
Yeah, I've gone to the dealer. But those idiots see my Magnaflow muffler, and immediately blame anything & everything on that... Idiots!!! I know for a fact that it isn't the muffler, but they refuse to listen... Just the other night I put the OEM muffler back on. Within the next month or so, I plan on taking it back to the dealer.
yes I have the same thing going on with my 04 screw they have not found it yet
but they know its there they did find that the shifter cable was out of its bracket
and thinking that was it but it was not
