Okay. To update, I'm having charging problems. My engine runs directly off the battery, and will not recharge the battery. Everything is new.
Something interesting happened today. I had the charging system tested and the tester said I had a bad battery.(It's new also) So I pull the ground off and test the battery again. Guess what? The battery is good. So I figure my ground is bad and replace it. Then the tester said "no charging voltage". I start looking at the plug to the regulator. There are four spade-type plugs labeled IASF. The one labeled "I" has NO wire coming out of it. The one marked "A" has two yellow wires coming out. One goes to the harness and one is broken off. The broken wire has 12.5V. The "S" wire is a green w/red stripe going into the harness, and the "F" wire is orange and is connected to the alternator.
One more thing, if the engine is running and you pull the neg cable off, the engine dies. Any ideas would be appreciated. Bill

I think you should fix that broken alternator (A) wire first then pull the cable off with engine running, probably your problem, The I terminal is for models with idiot light instead of ampmeter, also check the field (F) terminal on the back of the alt, should have have full power with the key on if not replace the ring spade and or wire from F terminal on reg to alt, not sure if your 70 has it but the 70's and 80's had a convienent push on rubber plug that connects the stator and field on the back of the alt and these connectors go bad and dont make the connection, diagnosed a 79 the other day bad connection, 5 cent ring spade solved the problem
Hey Dave, thanks for that link, it helped a lot. So I guess that the "A" wire is the one that puts the charge back in the battery? Is this right? Hope so, cause here goes. Thanks again! Bill

Think of "A" as the system monitor wire for the reg. This tells the reg the voltage level of the truck and it decides how much output the alt should have. The output wire of the alt that charges the battery is the large wire that goes to the "bat" terminal of the alt.
I had the same problem with my truck. Brand new alternator and battery. The problem............voltage regulator, buy a new one , they're pretty cheap.
What you need to do is to full field your alternator to see if your problem is the alternator or the voltage regulator/wiring.
In case you don't know full fielding an alternator is simply applying bater voltage to the field terminal on the alternator (on your 70 f-250 the wire is orange). If batery voltage increases when you do this then your alternator is OK , thus your voltage regulator is suspect. In this case it could also be a wiring problem. If batery voltage does not go up then the alternator is faulty.
i have to replace my voltage regulator about every six months or so ... pain in the #####, but it happens. You can get the regultor checked at any parts america/autozone/advanced auto type shop
