Sandblaster: Siphon or pressure?

Which do you prefer? Is one better than the other? I'm going to be buying one soon and can't decide which to get. Looking at one with 70-90 pound capacity. Thanks.

I have the siphon type and wouldn't recomend it to anyone wanting to do much. The pressure feed works much faster for the amount of air that is used.

Nothern Tools had the 100lb. on sale a while back for $100. Don't know if they still do. My local parts store has a similar unit for $150.

As said already, pressure will work faster than siphon

You already have the correct answers, but I have both. The only good thing about my siphon blaster is that it's in a cabinet. The cabinet is nice. Sometimes if I don't mind getting filthy, I even do the little parts with the pressure blaster ('cause it's faster).

You didn't ask, but make sure you have ALOT of air. A small blaster will tax a 2 cylinder 6.5 hp 60 gal compressor. Mine barely keeps up.

I use a siphon with my cabinet. Exhaust fan pulls out the dust, sand falls back in the blaster. Nozzel holes are opened up a little and this really helps. My comp is a 2 stage regulated to 125.

I have a 40lb pressurized blaster and love it. I used it to strip my '50 F1 frame down to bare metal, glass beaded a tri carb intake, and my buddy is currently using it to glass bead all the sheet metal on his 1930 something Plymouth. They are very versatile and useful tools. As the others have mentioned make sure you have a good air supply with a large tank and compressor head.(Preferably the quieter belt drive models.) I have the direct drive and it can be a loud pain with extended use.

Pressures the best for most applications. Remember to always use a respirator !!!! TIP TOOLS is a great source for sandblasting needs. Siphon is good for small projects and for people with alot of time.

Like mentioned, pressure is the quickest way to go. Although I have to say a siphon cabinet is great for smaller/cleaner jobs.

Ive got both, well made my own cabinet, and each is used for different reasons. The pressure blaster is for the quick and dirty removal of hard core grime on large parts but is only used OUTSIDE!!!

The siphon cabinet is for medium to fine work in a controlled environment, ie: indoors, especially when its cold out. Different tools for different reasons...dont look for an all in one solution. Like everyone said, get a large compressor if your doing any serious sand blasting for extended periods of time, oh and a good water seperator too.

Either type, siphon or pressure pot can be used outside or in a cabinet. The pressure pot is just more efficient.

I use a pressure pot type in a cabinet for art work, glass etc. including very fine work. The siphon type uses more air for the work that get done and the media feed is less consistent.

Bottom line is you can use either one for most any type of work if you have an adequate air supply and the correct media for the job.

Make sure you have the proper protective gear and respirator. The proper respirator can be more expensive than the sandblast equipment. Please don't use sand as a blast media. Check with the paint forum and some of the other threads here. There are much better and far less dangerous media to use.

You want a pressure if you are doing anything more than simple hobby stuff. YOu can not even compare the two -- Look in the tip tool catalog, (found online), it will give you an idea. ALWAYS WEAR A BREATHING MASK!!!!
