Does anyone know if I can get my tires evenly shaved on all 4 tires. I have had 2 sidewall punctures and some front end problems. Now 3 of my tires are unevenly scalloped and 2 of my tires have more tread than the other 2. I would like to get these shaved down so that they are all even. Does anybody know if this service even exists. They have quite a bit of tread on them and I would hate to have to ante up for new ones already. Also they are BFG mud terrains.
Thanks!
I know that if you have a tire that is out of round they can do what they call "truing" which is basically shaving off a high spot so I would imagine that they could do the same for scalloped or uneven tires. You might call around do your local tire shops and see if any of them offer this service. I have no clue what it costs though.
IMO though, unless they're causing really poor handling I'd just drive on them. The scalops will even themselves out over time and as far as 2 tires having more tread, you'll typically wear one pair faster than the other anyway. Why not use this to your advantage? I burn off rear tires faster due to a heavy foot on the throttle but guys who drive more sensibly will have faster wear on their front tires due to the weight of the engine over the axle. It would seem like a waste to have that extra tread shaved off.
That was my original idea, but after 8k miles the scalloping is the same or worse, probably too much pavement driving, oh well, they kinda bounce unevenly, just like the tire is a little out of round, lots of tread left though. I don't mind more tread on 2 of them, because as you stated, my lead foot would even things out. anyway thanks for your input, and congrats on the mud bogs and the captains cherry! although knowing your bad habits i'm sure that captains cherry was gone long ago, Love the video of the captain throwing mud! Thanks for posting it in the 4x4 offroad forum for me to check out.
Cheers!
shaving tires is illegal in most states check the DOT laws.
Where'd you hear this? I've looked into state laws extensively regarding vehicle equipments and I've never seen anything indicating that you can't shave a tire, only that the tread depth must be such and such, no shallower. So long as the tread depth is not significantly comprimised I've yet to see a state law prohibit this.
i have had tires trued (shaved)in the past,it was done by the tire shop i thad bought the tiers from originally.it helped to balance the really out of balanced tires, and corrected the irregular wearing of the tires.i pretty sure it was not illeagal,or they could not had done it.the tires were still only about 6 months old at the time.eventually i had to adress the real problem,i needed the front end redone.i dont know if the bad tires took out the front end,or vise-versa. i think if you have tires wearing funny, its a problem in the suspension/steering you should address.i found out the hard way.
