I've got a power steering leak in my 97 ranger. It requires topping off about every 2-3 days. What is the drawback to using a stop leak? Will it cause huge headaches?
Check all the hoses and connections first. If it's not that, then probably a seal in either the pump or the rack is worn. As a last resort, the Lucas PS stuff may help extend the life of the unit, I've used it before and gotten satisfying results.
Had the same problem with my 96 Ranger . Finally found that there is a length of steel pipe on the end of the high pressure power steering hose. This pipe is about 6 inches long and connects at the pump. The pipe runs right on top of the left frame member and is subject to galling vibration and simple rotting as it is in a bad spot to collect salt etc.
I suggest you clean out all the rust etc. around the pipe ( a pressure washer is good here ) but you can do it by hand brushing also . Then look for a small leak.
I thought my steering gear box was the culprit ( mega bucks ) as that seemed to be where the leak was coming from. I learned that a high pressure line can slow leak just as well as a low pres. line. If your lucky , all you need is a new p/steering hose!
