Question Bronco to Pickup compatibility??

Does anyone know if I can use the 4WD, 5.0 engine and possibly the steering column from a 1990 Bronco in a 1986 F-150 Stepside 2WD that currently has an Inline 6 Cyl? Aside from the rear drive shaft and the push button 4WD controls, I really don't know at this point if there needs to be any other mods.

I'd appreciate any help or pointers I can get.

Thanks,
John

Its gonna take alot more. The computer and wiring harness is differant, the fuel supply system is also differant as in 90 they used fuel injection but if you have lots of time and a complete donor vehicle ,anything is possible.

As long as you have the complete parts truck there should be only a couple of issues like the rear driveshaft and fuel lines which has already been stated. You will need motor and frame mounts, radiator, computer,etc..

Good Luck and sounds like a good project

Question A little more detail...

My Goal: To turn a 1986 F-150 2WD Stepside into a 4WD using a 1990 Bronco drivetrain.

The 5.0 in the '90 Bronco is not the stock engine. It has the same computer module as the '86 Pickup. If I can't find a suitable 300 6 Cyl. to put back in the truck I'll use the 5.0. The other issue is IF I use the 5.0, aside from changing motor mounts and the flywheel(the bronco is an automatic, the pickup is a 4 speed), will the 5.0 bolt to the bell housing that the 300 6 Cyl. used? If so, can I use the transfer case that bolts to the auto trans on a manual? I have tried asking around locally about these things but no one seems to know the answers. As always, I appeciate any info you folks can share.

Thanks,
John

The bellhousing is the same for the 300, 302 and 351W.
To use the Bronco's married t-case you will either have to have the tailhousing of the 4spd changed or get a 4spd from a 4wd truck.
Also all ford t-cases share the same 6-bolt mounting pattern.

Is there any certain code or number that identifies a transfer case made to bolt to a manual tranny? Ford trucks I know pretty well but I'm an amateur when it comes to 4 wheel drives.

86; its probably the NP208, and Ford was kind enough to keep the same bolt pattern for the Np205/208 and the BW1356(I think thats the right numbers).

Why not just rebuild the 300? Most guys here would go that direction over the 5.0.

If I can find another 300 I WILL go that direction but in the event I can't find one(within my budget) I'll opt for the 302. The current 300 is missing the whole top end and the block is cracked. I'd rather have a nice stout 300 6cyl. My first truck was a '74 with a 300 and it's the reason I have only owned Fords since. Thanks for the info on the transfer cases!

The 5.0L will work in the 86, but not 100% sure if the pick-up truck's 300I6 was EFi or carbed. I think that was the first year for EFI in the 300 and 302, the 351W got EFI in 87. If the 86 has a carburetor, you will need to change the entire fuel system as the EFI runs on much higher pressure. That includes the gas gauge, too. The 300I6 and 302 share common bolt patterns for the transmission, but it would be best to use the engine, tranny and t-case from the 90 to make things easier. You won't be able to use the 86 tranny since it's 2WD anyway. The 90 should have a Borg-Warner 13-56 t-case, and that also has the same bolt pattern for any 80's-up tranny. The difference will be in the tailhousing or tranny-to-tcase adapter and shifter linkage, as those are specific to a certain tranny model. A C-6 or E4OD shift linkage will work on a couple of the manual trannies but may need to be modified for proper length. Lastly, the steering column changed from 86 to 87, so the 90 won't work.
