starting with no key
i have an 84 f150 i have the key out and as soon as i connect the battery it tries to fire any suggestions?

That is the most likely cause.

It could also be a shorted wire in the system, or a bad ignition switch.

The first thing I would do is change the solonoid.

You can test it by removing the start wire from the solonoid, and hooking the battery back up. If it tries to start, then it's the solonoid, if it doesn't hook the start wire back up, if it tries to start, then it's possibly the ignition switch.

i had the same problem here, it was a sticking solonoid. i also got a new solonoid that was bad and had to buy another.
