Tomatoes don't rippen
I have a brother a Viet Nam vet living in Viet Nam. Told him this is the greatest thing on the Net. That someone would be able to help him. Says he is growing his tomatoes on the roof in Nam. They get green start to turn red and split. Anybody know why? He would appreciate your help. Claims he grew them successfuly in California (although I keep telling people in California that the tomatoes they eat here are nothing to the ones in Illinois).

splitting is from waaaaaaaay to much water. all the farmers here stop watering them when they start turning orange. this allows them to store the water they need and not overfill. i have done the spltting thing also,just back off the water. you want to give the plants a flase sense of a drought(SP?) this will trick the plant into survival mode. it makes the fruit taste better also and results in a good crop.

I agree, more sun, less water. the same ting happens with watermelons in Alabama and Florida (the world's finest melons, I might add) when there is too much rain and not enough straight sunshine.

See, I thought splitting towards ripening was caused by an unusual dry spell during the fruits growth 
Like when someone fails to keep up with watering for several days. I guess either over-watering or under-watering can cause it.
