[/B]My son's 69 F250 2 wheel wonders real bad. The whole front end was been rebuilt and we have removed all the slop we can in the adjustment nut. (Not super if it's power/power asst or manuel) anway can they be rebuilt? Is it diffcult? Is it like replacing gears and gaskets? If I buy a rebuilt one (I understand there's a Ford model and Bendix?) is it just a disconect hoses, drain fluid and unbolt type job...or are we talking rag join and all? I'm trying to convince myself to do all of this ourselves...thanks
pretty much unbolt and bolt replace the rag joint while your at it (very weak point $20 from ford) but it takes 3 men and a boy to lift that box very heavy and awkward to hold in place I believe its 3 or 4 bolts to the frame the pitman arm hoses and rag joint took me and 2 guys about 3 hrs
really...wow! Would a hydro jack worked or a stand of sorts? I understand or at least I thought I did that the rag joint was a rivet affair and when you replace it you needed to puch out and go to using bolts or somethig like that...sound right or do I have the wrong info..not sure myself.
the rag joint is bolted to the column and the box it will probley rip when your trying to take everything apart you can try a jack but the box is very awkward that why one of us held it from the top and one from the bottom while the third guy put the bolts in of course my garage is the open air concept with a dirt floor
If it has a P/S pump and high and low pressure hoses to the box, you have P/S. Bendix and Saginaw/Ford column shafts are about two inches different in lenght, so it important you know which you have first. If you have a Bendix box, the column can be reused but will need to be cut. The two boxes also use different driver's side engine perch mounts and firewall brackets. I've done the exchange from Bendix (which always leak) to a Saginaw/Ford and used a 79 column, which requires some wiring changes, but works and looks great! I suggest that you do change the rag joint first if it looks bad. It's not hard, though you do have to drill or dremel out the rivets and exchange with bolts. Your local auto supply should have "HELP" products display (red and yellow packaging) or check www.Motormite.com You will need #31000 ,steering coupling disc replacement kit for about eight bucks. Loosen the twelve point bolt on the steering box side of the rag joint. Next loosen firewall and steering column under dash bracket bolts a bit. Grab hold of the column and slowly work it into the cab a little until the rag joint clears and you able to take it out. Rebuild the rag joint and slip it back into place, push the column down and tighten your bolts....DONE!
