I am new @ this so be patient lol. I have a friend who I am helping work on his 1986 6.9 diesel. He just had the pump rebuilt and we put the pump back on. We are getting no fuel thru the pump we are getting fuel to the pump. The engine turns over very slow, he has replaced 2 batteries but it is still sluggish. I am guessing the starter. I read in the forum that the engine needs to spin @ at least 100 rpms. Any help would be appreciatted thanx
Yeah, the starter might be toast. Pump changes tend to be a little hard on them. Keep the batteries charged up and don't crank it for very long at one time. I always keep the throttle on the floor while I'm bleeding the injectors out (seems to help).
getting fuel to the pump but not thru it ? do you have the wires on the proper connectors? if you tried to jump the batteries across with one charger on both batteries, perhaps you cooked the wires inside the pump. I would imagine you would get fuel thru the pump no matter how slow the engine cranked.
As Malcolm stated above, the darned starters are sensitive to long cranking periods. Also, how did you remove the injection pump ?? Did you remove the pump with the tower cover ? or did you remove the pump by pulling it out of the back of the cover ? More info will allow us to be of more help to you.
Yeah, sometimes they take that last little bit of turning to get wet. Unfortunately that's usually two long cranks past the starter's safe zone. Once that magic smoke get's outta there, not much more you can do for 'em.
