Does anybody have or know wher I can get a rear driveshaft for my truck? It is a 78 stepside,351M 4X4. Cardon CV type. 54 inches in total lenth. I dont want to spend $200 on a new one! The CV part on the nipple end is worn off and the ball is shot!
I don't know of anywhere that you can find a replacement shaft for under $200 and chances are if you get a junkyard shaft you could have the same problems. Napa, and I imagine most other parts stores, sell a rebuild kit for the CV and then you'll want to replace both u-joints while you're at it. My front shaft CV rebuild cost me about $50 in parts (Napa is overpriced) and about an hour's time to assemble. I recommend taking the shaft to the store with you so you can be certain you get the right replacement parts. Ford mistmatched a lot of stuff and a lot of times what the book shows is not actually what you need.
Yes you would take it to a shop and let someone else do it. This is the Do It Yourself forum. He was asking for an inexpensive way to fix his problem. 50$ and an hours time sounds pretty inexpensive compared to shop prices.
And before we hear your standard "I've been doing this since dinasours were driving and I am a rocket scientist as well" response, I have been doing this for 30 years or so and have a clue as to what I am talking about as well.
The steel nipple will need to be taken to a machine shop. They will need to weld this piece on the end of the driveshaft.
You can find the remaining parts at jeff bronco graveyard (broncograveyard.com)
