I have an 04 5.4l with low miles, after reading about all the exhaust manifold stud problems what do guys think about changing over to the stainless studs before there is a problem? I am thinking that I might be able to just do 1 at a time without even removing the manifolds.
I'm thinking the same thing come next spring. What would be cool is if someone posted up with Ford's new part numbers for the stainless manifold bolts so we could double check the parts guy at the dealer
Well I got it all done today. I replaced 1 at time, did not have to remove the manifolds and no leaks after it is all done. Drivers side is more difficult than the passenger but can be done. You will need an inverted torx socket for the new studs, the old are standard hex.

Hmm... I don't think I'll have a problem with it - just say the manifolds are bad, a new one costs $500, and the headers are $199 for the pair.
That'll sail right on past without batting an eye... the y-pipe mods and muffler are going to be a pain though... well, the muffler anyway.

I must be old school if its not broke don't fix it.
guys this is pointless if the truck is newer than 03. ford already uses stainless. there was a entire thread on this.
This is not so, The studs that I removed were not stainless. Ford TSB # 05-5-4 covers these studs in the 99-04 model years. Anyone in question can simply go out with a magnet and check for themselves.

Uh, stainless steel is "ferrous" meaning a magnet would stick to it... that ain't gonna do nothin;
