alrighty im in the process of putting everything back together. i noticed that the intake manifold is gunked up and the smaller piece that connects between the intake manifold and the head has a ton of crap in it....how do i clean this out and get it all smoothe again? what is the easiest way to rid the black build up. thanks.
If you've got it apart you can do a decent job with a bottle brush and some carb cleaner, but won't be able to get it all. A better option IMO is to use the BG upper intake cleaner. We just started using this stuff at work a few month ago and it is awesome. If you look on BGfindashop.com you should be able to find someone in your area that offers the service. You could do it yourself, but it would be a pain. And you don't want to breathe teh chemicals that are used.
You can buy wire brushes that fit in a drill of various shapes and sizes that work well for all kinds of restoration chores. Also they make a lot of tools for cleaning grilles (the kind you cook on) as far as brushes scrapers or whatnot that are handy to have around. Oven cleaner and brake parts cleaner break down thick gunk real well. Yes, oven cleaner. Think about it...
If your not into getting your hands dirty then you can have the parts hot tanked and bead blasted.
Its carbon buildup. Wire brush and some oven cleaner should work. Or dip it in a bucket of kerosene. Carb/throttle body cleaner should work too. I start pulling my motor this morning, in about 6 hours. Im looking foreward to a lot of cleaning. I should get some sleep.
i am trying the oven cleaner now...the parts are sitting and waiting for me to rinse them off. i am not too worried about the alum. turning black...if it looks bad, i will just paint it to match the rest of the purdy engine. thanks for the help...keep the ideas coming; any knowledge of this stuff is welcomed in case this doesn't completely work.

That Purple Cleaner they sell at Walmart. It wont effect the aluminum but it will clean the crud just soak the part over night then wash it with a pressure washer.Cleans down to the metal. I have a poly barrel with about 10 gallons of the stuff in it. And a washing machine pump to keep things aggitated. Works great, it's biodegradable and non flamable.
Read the label on wally world purple stuff it contains sodium hydroxide (caustic soda) (lye) Now it may not be strong enought to do much (that was my opinion when I tried it) damage. The castrol purple stuff, I use it to soak iron and steel parts it has enough sodium hydroxide to work real well. Especially if kept agaitated and warm. Dawn dish washing soap will also work if you make mix it strong enough it to contains some sodium hydroxide. Remember that Oakite that the machine shops use is nothing but a strong sodium hydroxide.
I've been using it for a couple of years now, and have soaked quite a few intakes overnight. I haven't noticed any eching even on the shiney gasket surfaces. I use the stuff straight no delusion. The sodium hydroxide must be minimal as it is fairly easy on the hands.
it would take quite a bit of purple stuff to get the intake manifold completely submerged...i have found that diesel fuel works...but not very well.....so far, the oven cleaner did well but i do like the sounds of the purple.
