Automatic shift position detector

I have a C6 in my '68 F250 Highboy that's not original and it has no mechanism for telling if its in park or reverse. Is there a setup that goes either on the tranny or on the column that will sense Park and Reverse?

Peter, PRNDL is pretty much the standard for all auto shifts. There can be a little change with OD but the top 4 are the standard shift pattern.

I'm sorry, I wasn't clear. I'm looking for the mechanism that sits on the linkage that detects when you're in park to allow the car to start and detects when you're in reverse to turn on reverse lights.

Oh, Why didn't you say so??

You are refering to to the netural safety switch. It is on top of the steering column about 8in off the floor. It looks very much like a shift indicater. You will have to check to see what is there so you will know how to continue.

It looks like this, ebay item #4603342362. It is on top of the steering column underneath the dash.

Thanks for the link. The picture is a huge help. That bolts on the steering column and is driven by the linkage? Can I use it to detect reverse as well? And this is under the dash, I'll have to take a look and see what's there - ought to at least be a plug or something left.

There's a little finger on the column that moves with the lever near the steering wheel. Should be 2 small threaded holes in the column to mount the switch also. You use that finger to move the slide portion of the neutral safety switch to either an ON or OFF position. It'll take a little adjusting to get the switch to close while in Park and Neutral. Switch should be open in Reverse & Drive.

The steering column has 3 main parts to it. The outer column is the piece you see. Inside of that is a hollow shift tube and inside of that is a steel rod that is the steering rod. The neutral safety switch mounts onto the outer column and there is a little Y-shaped thing that clips onto the shift tube. The down part of the Y sticks up and when you shift that part moves the switch. You'll probably need one of those also. It's called an "A/T Neutral Safety Switch Selector Control Pin". Go to dennis-carpenter.com and you'll find one on page 22 of the catalog for our trucks. It's $18 in this catalog but I think I bought mine at the dealer for less than $10.

Great, I found the end of the pin sticking out of the shaft up under the dash. I ordered a safety switch from Macs. How do I rig a reverse switch?

No idea. I don't know how your truck runs without the darn thing. When I first bought my truck the neutral safety switch was dangling from under the dash and I had to manually hold the thing in the right position before it would start. I didn't know anything about the pin.

Your PO must have joined the neutral safety wire together so that it will start in any gear. You should find those, separate them, and then tie them into the new switch wiring. You might be lucky and the PO may have left the connector from the NS switch and tied the wires together after the connection.

Here's a picture of what you might find. I was in the same situation as you.
