Just bought a 2002 F150 FX4 5.4 V8. Gradually getting all the filters and fluids changed one weekend at a time. Today I tried changing the tranny filter. Got the pan off, drained a few quarts (I know there's more hiding somewhere), pryed off the filter, and was getting ready to install the new one when I realize I have the wrong filter and gasket. My pan has 14 holes, the new gasket is much larger and has 20 holes. The new filter is also much bigger than the old one. I got it at Autozone and looked at their website to verify I had the right one for my truck and the part number matches. Anyone here know what's up here? Do I need to specify how many holes the pan has in order to get the right filter? Even then, the part # would be different right? I'm so confused!!!
Yeah, I'm going to take the old filter and gasket in to make sure I'm getting the right thing. If that don't work I guess I'll have to just put the old filter back on and fill 'er up with new fluid and hope she works alright. When I finally pryed the old filter off it flew several feet and landed in the dirt. I cleaned it off pretty well for taking it to the store, but I'm not too sure about putting back into the truck.
what you have is a 4r70w they gave you stuff for a e40d
Wow, thanks for the info. The guy I was talking to (the sales manager of all things) seemed pretty clueless and couldn't really answer any of my questions with any certainty. I knew the kind of tranny my truck has, but he never asked about it. The computer just spit out some part numbers based on the truck being a 02 F-150.
if that filter landed in dirt and you used water to clean it by no means put it back in. what brand do you want?
I just wiped down the old filter with a rag, no water. Mostly it had some dead grass and dust on it, but I still don't want to reuse it.
As for brands I'd prefer Motorcraft or any respectable brand. Don't really care as long as it filters properly.
In the mean time my truck will sit on ramps in the driveway with a dry tranny pan until morning. Then I'll use "her car" to drive into town and get what I need. I cleaned the pan and put it back on with a couple of bolts to make sure a cat doesn't try to crawl into the transmission tonight. I ASSuME it'll be okay til morning.
