the ABS light just started comming on on my 99 F150.
i notice that the pedal was seeming to getting a little
soft so i changed out the master cyl. and the front
pads.
it usually goes off at start up but, comes on
when i start to drive.
i can do most repairs but know nothing about the ABS
system.

Could be the ABS sensor on the diffs. Turning off at startup is normal, but when it comes back on when you start driving, sounds like one of the sensors could be bad. You will have one on the diff that has ABS. 4 wheel ABS...both diffs.
looked in to it couldn't find it. Did clean off the
front wheel sensors. one was caked with junk.
couldn't figure out what as there is no oil or grease leaks. area was clean and dry.
now it seems to stay off when i first take off
for 10 to 12 miles or so. it seems like the
warmer it gets the faster it comes on.
i replaced many at the dealer, its the rear wheel speed sensor its located on the top of the rear diff. about a 20 dollar part and 10 minutes to climb under there
back again, folks. mine came on today after sitting at the body shop (finally got the rear window replaced) for a week in the rain, ice and snow up in Reading Mass.
Will check the hookup to the sensor before I go trudging off to find the part.
as always, good advice on this site...
