New Guy From AZ

Hi, again. I did my first post yesterday on another thread; but I figured I had better be polite and introduce myself formally.

My name is Phil and I am from AZ, Mesa to be exact. I've been into things automotive since the 1960's when I was a teenager, so that will tell you how old I am. I'm not retired, I still work, mostly for my own company. I'm a mechanical engineer by education, a hot rodder by self-teaching. My interests are old cars and trucks, mostly hot rods. I'm currently negotiating on buying a '48 F-1 project pickup. It's in pretty good shape, complete, its just apart. My reasoning is buy the pickup, finish it, and use it as the go-fer/daily driver for the other project, a '29 roadster pickup hot rod. No pictures for a gallery...yet.

I found this site from a link on the H.A.M.B. and from reading several threads here, I see that the cross-pollination thing works as I recognize several guys here from there. My sign-on name is the same here as the H.A.M.B. so yeah its me. I understand about different rules, attitudes and cultures, so I'll take my time and learn how you folks do things here. For those who don't know, the H.A.M.B. is the Hokey A** Message Board on the jalopyjournal.com site. Its a traditional hot rods site.

What I've seen of your site so far is impressive and everybody seems to like to play nicely together which is great. I like the technical info I've seen so far and what I've seen in some of the threads will be very helpful to me on the F-1 project. I won't just take, I think there are some things I can contribute to help others out. Oh, and I'm not afraid to post, I've just got to learn that posting pictures thing. That's me and Thanks for having me.

Hello Phil,
Welcome to the board! Yes we have quite a few guys here who are regulars on other boards. You might check out the BonusBuilt boards also, they are usually very informative. This board is probably one of the friendliest and family orientated boards that I've seen. Everyone is very respectful of each other, and the varying opinions and build styles.

You will be able to get tons of help for your project, whether you just need to vent when Murphy's Law strikes, pat yourself on the back for a small step forward, or the find the answer to a question that eludes you, you have come to the right place.

I can't wait to see some pics of your projects.
We are glad to have you!
Bobby

AZAV8 -

Hi, and welcome to FTE! I have visited H.A.M.B. a few times, but don't post there. I just like to read the Tech section stuff. Glad to have another mechanical engineer on here. Maybe we'll understand each other (hehehe). Everybody else says we talk funny and have no sense of humor. These are some great folks with a wealth of info and experience.

We are about the same age, but I didn't get into hot rods untill I bought my 56 about 3 years ago. I'm doing everything on it myself and learning as I go, so I'll be interested in what you have to offer.

As to posting pictures, this is from the "Reference Threads" sticky at the top of the forum page. Easy instructions. There's other great stuff in there, too.

Again, welcome

Welcome Phil! I frequent both boards, post a little on HAMB. About the only difference is the language thing. You'll get along fine. While intro's are nice we don't get too **** about them - we save that for other trivial issues Hotrodding is cool here, but you'll get flamed if you ask for tech help on any other brand engine.

The 48 sounds like a fun project as does the 29. I tore a 48 down to the frame about 7 years ago (can it really be that long ago?) and have been using it as a daily driver for over 4 years now. It's pretty much stock and the used flathead is now in need of a total rebuild. My gallery has some odds and ends of shots in it. If you need ideas or advice ask away. The guys here will have an answer for you ....... and some will even be right. lol Later....

Welcome Phil. I too am a Mech. Engineer by trade. Folks here have been very patient with me and extremely helpful. I've dissambled a couple of F1's and hope to be turning the corner in another couple of weeks and begin the repair/builds. This is by far the friendliest forum on FTE. Any ribbing I've seen has been very good-natured.

There seem to be two camps here. Stockers and dark-siders (those that modify/hot-rod) with subsets of each. Big block vs. small block is one. I plan to use a 351 Cleveland in one of my F1's so niether side has given me any grief in that department. There are the all Ford vs. others. Since it's a Ford themed site, the all-Ford guys run the show as it probably should be. non-Ford stuff gets discussed as long as it doesn't involve mine is better that Ford type stuff and the discussion doesn't get too involved in detailed technical aspects of the non-Ford components. This seems to be limited to the engines though. There has been a lot of recent discussion on adapting Jag suspensions to our trucks and we've been given a very long leash with it. Probably OK since Jag is now Ford. I'm sure you get the point.

Look forward to your contributions. Though in my opinion, it's OK to just take. It generates discussion and produces information that is helpful to many others.

Welcome aboard.

Welcome aboard Phil. This is a great forum. I am just another Mechanical Engineer (there seem to be a few of us here) doing a 49 F-1. The info on the Jag suspensions is an excellent example of the sharing of information that has taken place recently. We have a couple of Aussies that have contributed greatly to the knowledge base on installing the Jag XJ suspensions. It seems that it is a common transplant into F-1's and F-100's in Australia. If you are considering an IFS check up on the thread.

Phil,

Glad to have you aboard. I tried the HAMB board but just couldn't get past all the four letter words...none here and we like it that way. If people can't communicate without four letter words they don't really have much to say to begin with...Apparently we have traveled similar routes. Before I started on my current 48 F-3, my last project was a 29 Ford tudor sedan. Good minds think alike...

Hey Phil, bring on the project! We like problems and pix. If you hit a snag, it's happend to at leat a dozen guys on here before. Most are willing to help you by providing their solutions. Rarely do we hear a problem that is new. Usually just a variation of a common situation. Is your project going to be stock or darkside (custom)?? My truck is done so I have to live vicariously through other builders. Jag

Thanks for all of you making me feel welcome. The truck I am negotiating for is on the "dark" side. It already has a '78 Mercury 302 and C4 transmission in it. I would probably go with the C4 rebuilt and a 351 Windsor or bigger crate motor with a 9" Ford rear end. That will give me F-1 parts to sell to offset the cost of the new stuff. I'm looking at the Chassis Engineering MII crossmember and front end and the CE rear spring kit. The CE MII cross member is a bolt-in so that makes it easier to install. The body would be "stock" because I like the look of the original sheetmetal. A/C for the interior, it gets too hot in AZ to not have it. Probably a Ranger 60-40 seat. Wheels and tires are undecided as of yet. Color: Dana Red.

Welcome aboard. I am not a mechanical engineer . I guess its not a requirement here (even though it seems that way), since they have not banned me yet.

They do use one four letter word over here though. WORK!

All kidding aside, this is a great group of guys.
