Ok Windows users, in case you are too busy reading only truck stuff and have not heard about the vulnerability recently announced regarding images being a source of intrusion on your machine.
The mickeysoft explanation "A remote code execution vulnerability exists in the Graphics Rendering Engine because of the way that it handles Windows Metafile (WMF) images. An attacker could exploit the vulnerability by constructing a specially crafted WMF image that could potentially allow remote code execution if a user visited a malicious Web site or opened a specially crafted attachment in e-mail. An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could take complete control of an affected system."
Basically, you could go to a webpage and just seeing a picture could infect your machine. So really, everyone that runs windows needs this patch ASAP.
Next question:
In the "Other available downloads" I keep seeing something about a ".NET Framework" download, needed if you are running aplications built for it...
What applications? And why should I be concerned? How would I know one way or the other?
If you don't have .NET framework installed, you aren't running any programs for it. If you try to install anything written on the .NET framework, you will be prompted to either download it from MS, or the program you're installing will come with the .NET framework installation and automatically do it for you.
Unfortunately, my daughter's laptop can't get Microsoft updates. She gets an error message saying something to the effect that the software is illegal. She got the software from her university. It's "given" to all students that request it.

That is interesting, Probably one of the students posted the Windows product key on a warez site. Any key microsoft dicovers being illegally "shared" they add to a list that they use to stop people from getting any updates like service pack 2, security patches, etc. Only way to get around it is to call microsoft and see if you can get a new key issued to you.
