Welcome to the forum!! And welcome to the best type of engine you can get in a truck, a diesel.

I'd try some other mods before you jump into a new turbo. The PSD has a lot of potential with it's stock turbo. Do some searches on the forum, you'll find a lot of useful information on what to do first. But this should get you started:
-Kwikk Filter / 6637 Filter
-4" Exhaust
-Guages
-Disabling your wastegate
-CCV Mod
-Wicked Wheel or ATS compressor housing
-6 Position Chip
-HPX crossover tube
-IH "Blue" CPS
-MAP Sensor boost tube regulator
-Sonnax/Tricumlator kit for your trans, if it's an auto
-Then get into upgrading your fuel system

I think you'll find the stock turbo system has a lot of potential

Keep reading the different threads, and searches on the above mentioned items. You'll learn a lot. I spent a lot, a lot, a lot of time reading here when I found this forum. I learned more than I ever though I could and now have a Powerstroke capable of dusting off many ricers and a lot of other diesels, as well as better fuel mileage than it did when it was stock.

great post.

"turbo kits" for ricers and other cars are supposed to give good horsepower gains, but that is not the case in the powerstrokes. the ford factory tuning is very "detuned," meaning that international/FMC only tuned the 7.3 to 45-50% of its capability. alot of us here are modifying them to run 75-80% of its capability, and boy is it awesome. i basically have the modifications listed above, and it does run great.

Question turbo kits

Thanks fro the info guys, i'm really new to the diesel family and have no clue as to where to start, can you tell me what to buy first and such. About how much do you think all the fine tuning will rack me?, also it seems that in my truck when i give it throtle (when i'm driving down the road) it revs up and stays in high rpms for a while until i have to tap on the brakes to bring it back down and the it will shift , but with a lil thud, one guy tells me i need a new turbo, and one tells me other, any ideals? thanks, Jeremy

HogHead,

Are you saying that your trans doesn't go into overdrive, (4th gear)?

If so, you may be a candidate for what the Sonnax valve is originally designed for, unreliable shift points.

What i'm sayin is that when i give it the throtle to try to get it up to say 55 to 60mph , the rpms rev up to almost 3 and stay there until i either let off the peddle or tap the brakes, I have no ideal whats going on with it, it will then make a thud (or jerk) and then seem to shift ok, i do know? One thing is my fuel milage really stinks and it seems as there is not enough power at all, i really would like to know what i can do to chanke this all, thanks for any info

Count the shifts for us. Does it seem to stay in third gear and not go into overdrive?

What happens if you push the little button on the end of the gear selector lever. A little light should illuminate with the word "OFF".

Does this change things at all?

When i turn off the overdrive i can tell the differance it will bog down a lil, when i turn it on somtimes it shifts fine but most of the time it takes awhile for it to shift,or i let off the peddle or tap the brake.

There is a TSB for shifting from D to OD. Don't know if this will apply for you. Mine acted similar but only while towing. TSB calls for a reflash of PCM. Getting mine done from DP tuner.

Sounds to me like your transmission is slipping pretty bad.
The good news is you can get a new improved monsterbox shipped for only $3477 until the end of January.

It's a stronger built version of the 4R100 by Factory Tech.
