Smog Worries.

California really does suck. I need to get out of this state and fast. Smog laws have been slowly making it harder and harder for you to own a vehicle unless it is a hybrid or full electric. My truck isn't due for smog yet...but I am worried that it is not going to pass...mainly because I am hearing some rattling from my upper exhaust and I fear it is a seperated honeycomb in one of my cats. California doesn't allow you to replace cats with anything except factory so I think I'm screwed. Has anyone had to replace their cats in California? BTW, I have the stupid design where I have two cats built into each collector pipe.

Hunt around for a less envirofreak inspector. Some take their jobs a little too serious. What exactly is involved in a CA smog test? Sniffer?

btw, what's it cost to get one inspected out there?

Usually, as long as the check engine light isn't lit, the cats are working fine. The rear o2 sensors will trip the light if the cats get inefficient.
It could just be a rattling heat shield.
