Both the 12 V power supply on the dash and the cig lighter stay on all the time. The power outlet on the back of the center console does as well. It sure would be nice for at least one of these to go off when the ignition is off.
I have an XM tuner plugged into the power supply and I have to manually turn it off at night.
Is there any way to add another power supply under the dash? I don't like the way the plug for my Sirius sticks out when plugged into the cig lighter or aux power source.
You can add an additional cigarette type adapter behind the dash. These are available at Radio Shack for about $7.00. The cable end of the adapter is bare so splice into the wires below.
From the stereo harness, here are the wires to splice:
GREEN/PURPLE = Power
BLACK/LT GREEN = Ground
GREEN/YELLOW = Ignition
The other option is wire is to the fuse panel under the hood (no switched fuses in the cab.) Get some fuse taps from Radio Shack ($1.50 for four) and solder the wire to it and insert.
Thanks toddlarry!! A couple of other questions, if I want the unit to stay on even if the switch is off (I have a Sirius with replay so it records up to about 45 minutes) can I use one of the fuse taps and go into the interior fuse panel? I think there are at least two open fuse slots in my '05 S-Crew. Does it matter which one I use?
Again thanks for the info!
Max2001... By switch, I assume you mean ignition. Yes, you can go to the interior panel and find a fuse that will stay on. I'm not sure which are available, but you can tap any of the existing 15-20 fuses as the Sat Receivers only use 5-6v of power.
Your assumption is correct that I did mean ignition.
Using the aux power on the dash currently requires me to power the unit down if I am parking it for a long period of time (at work or overnight). But when out running errands, I just leave the Sirius unit on, then I can rewind to a favorite song or some conversation from a talk channel. It's like Tivo for radio.
I will be visiting Radio Shack today to get a fuse tap and additional cig type adaptor to mount under the dash. That will really clean up the look of the install.
Thanks again for the suggestions and explanations!
