this is my first winter with this truck bought it in july this year...here's where i'm at with my nightmare... aka 99 f-350, changed glow plugs, relay, fuel filter, 2 batteries and 5w-40 rotella synthetic... the only mods the truck has that i know of is 6637 air filter because old air box would leak dirt into intake, found that on gp change. and muffler delete... to lower egt's when towing 16,000 pd trailer. after sitting 8 hours or less(not plugged in) will start (very stubburnly) even did this at 50 deg temps and will misfire for a good half hour even well into operating temp. after sitting for 12 hours or more: no start no smoke from tailpipe while cranking. if plugged in it will start relatively easy but still misfires but not as suverely. i checked all maxi fuses with test light under the hood all checked good. when cranking it seems like only 1 or 2 injectors are firing. if i use either to start it seems to run on it till it picks up fuel...checked the hpop res. it stays full overnight checked fuel filter also full overnight i am going out to recheck hpop and fuel filter now...
i'm not asking too much from this diesel... my cat 3406b fires on the first try and my friend has a 99 250 and i get laughed at when attempting to start mine we park next to each other at work, very embarresing well have to drag it down to the shop with the tractor and a chain put the charger on it... what kinda rpm you need while cranking to get these pigs to fire??? maybe starter is week??? i heard one guy say his tach registers 500 rpm mines about 200 or so
yep fuel filter filled right up this morning i drained it and put some lucas in the rest i let the pump fill up i'm about to let it win and bring it to someone else... tri state diesel service they dont specialize in powerstrokes but i get my caterpillar parts from em my biggest drawback is i have no access to a scanner
that will cause a no start cold?? well i guess i'll run out and unplug the block heater before bed tonight! and disconnect the icp let you know what happens
It would cause a no start period. With the thing misfiring up to half an hour after you start it and an entirely new glow plug system, I'm assuming you have a starting problem...not just a cold starting problem.
it happens after sitting for a long period like today havent started it in 2 days went out and no start not plugged in dragged it down to my fathers shop plugged it in for an hour and a half charged the batteries and it started not well and misfiring let it run for an hour went for a ride misfire cleared up brought it back let it run for a little while i cleaned the snow off shut it down and it starts good if it hasnt been sitting
with the icp sensor unplugged it started on the 3rd try this morning and had enough smoke from the tailpipe in my opinion after sitting outside all night in about 20 deg with a good 20 mph wind! this is better than ever before!!! you know your stuff cookie!! now i'm just worried if i put a new one on it will go back to normal it never had the ses light come on till this morning shouldnt a bad sensor trip the light?? at least it starts
would a flash or chip help my cold start and give more fuel while cranking or just make it worse??? i was leaning towards dp tuner real cheap and seems to have impressive mpg on 80hp economy setting just looking to make the truck start and run a little better another quick question does the aih come on with the glows or just after its running not sure if mine is working and it needs all the help it can get... thanks again cookie i know it can be diffacult if not impossable trying to diagnose a problem just from limited descriptions on a forum
now we're getting somewhere!! i'll look into the ipr thanks for the info. right now i'm looking for a decently priced icp sensor ford $165 thats rediculous... ebay got some for $30-$40 and one guy selling a used one for $50 it must have sentamentle value!
