Glad to be here. I've heard there are some pretty knowledgable people here, hopefully someone can give me good input.
I have an 05 FX4 with 34K. It's been in to have the cam phasers (whatever they are) replaced and a few other minor problems fixed. Here's my problem.....I've had an oil consumption problem for quite some time now. At 3k miles from my oil changes I'm down almost 5 quarts. This is a continuous problem. I don't have any leaks, but I do notice if I accelerate hard there is noticable smoke from my exhaust. It only smokes until I get up to speed and only when I accelerate hard. The dealer where I live has marked my dipstick and asked me to check my oil weekly so they can track my consumption. I also tow a 3k lbs. travel trailer on occasion and notice I consume more oil when doing this.
Any of you "all knowing" super mechs. have any input????
We are happy you have chosen the best source for Fords!

See you on the boards. ….
Using a quart every 600 miles is not acceptable, no matter what you are pulling. My 04 does not use a quart in 3000 miles including pulling a trailer. If the PCV does not fix it, you have a major problem that the dealer needs to address quickly.
Wow ! 600 miles to the quart is real bad. It's bad enough Ford allows 900 miles per quart before they acknowledge that your oil consumption is a "problem". You are destroying your emission systems, mainly the catalytic convertor. You're almost out of warranty so PLEASE have Ford fix it ASAP!
I appreciate all the words of wisdom. Currently the dealer here has me checking my oil level weekly and bringing it back to them when the level changes so they can track the consumption.
Can anyone tell me if this is an acceptable practice??? It seems sensible to me that they should keep it until they figure out the problem. It's almost like they've put the burden of trouble shooting on me.......
If given the choice between you logging the miles or the dealership, I would prefer to put the miles on the truck myself (ever notice how differently you drive rental and loaner cars?) The mechanics and salesmen aren't going to treat your truck with the respect it deserves. You might want to ask them to flip some gas money your way since you're helping to "solve" the problem.
yet another fine bit of advice. never thought about puttin the bill in their hands for gas......especially helpfull these days. thanks for the input thoor
On the bright side at least your dealer is doing something. I'm sure Ford makes them go through specific "diagnostic" steps before they will authorize major repair work. Even if you you pass the 36,000 mile warranty mark you should still be covered since you brought this to the "attention" before the warranty was up. But I'd try to get that in writing anyway.
very true.....even though i purchased the "super bullet proof" extended warranty i will make sure they cover it under my original warranty. at least it'll save me the 50 dollar deductible.
Do you have the ESP warranty? I was pleasantly surprised that my extended warranty adds rental car coverage. I took my truck in for a variety of small issues, and even though the mileage is only 23K, the dealership gave me a free loaner for 5 days. They said it was covered by the ESP extended warranty.
Just something else to keep in mind if they end up keeping your rig for awhile.
man....i really have to read stuff better. yeah, i do have the esp. i thought it said "rental reimbusement". i'll have to bring this up to my service guy next time it's in. they are pretty reluctant to give up vehicle.
My rep told me to ask to be transferred to the rental desk after scheduling a warranty service appt. He said the biggest problem is that they only have a few rentals available. It's frustrating because they have a whole lot full of cars and trucks, but they only have a few in the rental fleet. As long as a reservation is confirmed ahead of time, I'll always have free loaners from here on. Also, note that I didn't pay a red penny for the rental, no deductible, no nada, no nuttin.
Yeah, last time I asked, my service department said they had done away with they're "loaner" and "rental" service. Well, got news for them.......one way or another.......they're footin a bill from now on. I've had my ride 18 months and it's been in the shop 8 times. And of course the lame place never has parts in stock so I'm out a truck for who knows how many days. Not again.
